Artist Interview: Ivan de Monbrison





What is your name:  Ivan de Monbrison

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist:  I am self taught..

What is the style of your pieces: expressionists i would say even though i don't like to put it in a specific category

What is the medium in which you work: For the drawings and paintings indian ink, acrylic..

What started you on your path as an artist:  the death of my father..i had to give some meaning to life it seemed all too absurd when it occurred..

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: Some freedom to a certain extent, some distance with the world too

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: i would have to say films..probably because it is visual..but only old movies..most of the recent stuff is shallow

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like:  I have two kind of shows, the group ones which i don't like much mostly because very often there is no connections between the artists and the one man show which has the advantage  for me that they give me some perspective on a whole serie of my work

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: no..

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? that usually what seems to be the most revelevant to you is often not what appeals more to the public, so there is a misunderstanding then..

What is your favorite sandwich of all time:  I am a veggie so a cheese one...

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: I focus more on drawings than working on the canvas

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: Alberto Giacometti

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: A Dogon Statue, it is African, and it is at the met in New York

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: I used to have a rat and he would come at me when i started working which was not very convenient.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: I am showing some work at the Siena Art Institute in Siena in september, and some in Bruxelles at the galerie Le Croissant late november..
