Chicago, IL – The artwork of Chicago Artist Claudia Smalley will be featured at Green Zebra Restaurant through September 2011.

Chicago artist Claudia Smalley will feature her latest collection of artwork at Green Zebra in Chicago which is a continuation of her Synapse series. “Synapse” serves as an interpretation of the biological/mechanical relationships and as a commentary to the human race's dependence on technology to survive. This technology is now such an essential means to connect, transmit and receive information that it's hard to get around the idea of living without it.  As inspiration for her work, she looked to biological imagery and used the elements seen in these images to create patterns of gaps and forms to create the gestural work you see within the series.

Claudia has shown work at national venues including the Polish Museum of America and has most been recently been selected by the Chicago Art Institute's Curator of Modern and Contemporary art as an ArtFutura 2011 finalist. Claudia has been featured in local/national/international print publications such as the Chicago Reader, CBS Chicago (web edition), Business News Daily, and La Republica (The national newspaper of Italy).

About Claudia Smalley
Claudia Smalley is a first-generation Polish-American artist whose parents immigrated to Chicago in the late 1970s. Her passion to express creativity through the visual arts originated in her early childhood and continued through college, where she studied Industrial Design and Art History, graduating with Highest Honors. She then continued her studies to receive a dual-MBA from the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign. Her work is frequently the result of studying the color and composition of historical works and then freely reinterpreting them with her own contemporary perspective. Riggo Design, Inc. J. Andrews Salon, Annual Art Opening Chicago

Riggs Barr, a local artist and founder of Riggo Design, is participating in J. Andrews Salon’s Annual Art Opening (1260 North Dearborn, Chicago) Friday, May 6th from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. This show will feature Riggo Design handmade pieces of steel wall art, including mirrors, sconces, crests and more - all of which are for sale. He also designs and builds steel furniture and accent pieces on a commission basis. Other artists featured include, Lynn Floriano showcasing her jewelry and Joerg Metzner displaying his photography.

Riggo Design, Inc. was founded by Riggs Barr, a Chicago artist who creates custom furniture and sculptural pieces made of raw steel. His pieces are for people and businesses who cringe at cookie-cutter furniture design or for those who know what they want but just can’t find it anywhere. Who understand a custom table can (and should) be a lot more than a place to drop your keys. It’s an opportunity to make a dramatic first impression, a bold declaration of style. It’s a chance to create a timeless family heirloom…where you can drop your keys.

Signs of Sustainability Artists Claudia Smalley and Magda Smolenska Chicago

Artists Claudia Smalley and Magda Smolenska will be exhibiting November 23rd  through January 8th at Elephant Room, Inc. in Chicago.  Signs of Sustainability is an exhibition resulting from Claudia and Magda’s artistic partnership, HOBOartlab.  Through this collaboration, the artists focus on developing unique oil, watercolor and mixed media paintings on canvas.  HOBOartlab donates a percentage of sales to select charities, with the goal being to exhibit art that can positively influence a community and possibly make an impact.

Signs of Sustainability is an exhibition of new paintings and mixed media works by Claudia and Magda.  Claudia’s work frequently explores the familiarity of color and composition of historical works by freely reinterpreting them from her own contemporary perspective.  For this exhibition, Claudia  also introduces a new body of work that harkens back to her industrial design roots and features figurative shapes while playing with composition and color schemes.  Magda’s work is a series of paintings that experiment with different media and techniques.  Her vast pallet and evidence of tools reveal paintings that are a manifesto of feelings, colors and assemblies.  Signs of Sustainability  is a visual marriage of strokes, colors, and shapes between two contemporary artists who are interested in positively contributing to the community through the display of their work.

HOBOartlab reached out to their fans through Facebook and Twitter and asked what organizations they were most passionate about.  Chicago-based not-for-profit, Vital Bridges was chosen as the organization to donate a portion of the sales to from this exhibition.  Vital Bridges’ mission is to help people through metropolitan Chicago impacted by HIV and AIDS to improve their health and build self-sufficiency by providing food, nutrition, housing, case management and prevention services.

The opening reception for Signs of Sustainability is Friday, December 3rd 6-9pm.  There will be an artist talk open to the public on Thursday, December 9th 5-6pm.  The closing reception is on Friday, January 7th 7-9pm.

Local Artist Showcases Works At North Riverside Mall Theatre Chicago

Chicago Artist To Display Work in Theatre Lobby
Throughout the Month July

North Riverside, IL - Since early childhood, Claudia Smalley has possessed a passion for creativity and the visual arts. Her now 10-year art career was fueled by the large amount of exposure to the arts as a young child and by her encouraging parents, who always provided exposure to the arts, as well as art materials to inspire her imagination. Throughout the month of July 2010, Claudia will be sharing her work with the visitors to the popular North Riverside Mall Theatre, located at 7501 West Cermak Road, where her paintings will be on display in the lobby exhibit space.

Originally from Mt. Prospect, Claudia will be exhibiting her most recent series titled "Peek" which explores the use of color and gesture. Her collection began when she looked back to 18th century Spanish still life paintings and tried to mimic the color and composition. The preceding pieces morphed from that initial exploration and have become more refined in form and more exploratory in color. Enthusiastically speaking about her upcoming showcase at the North Riverside Mall Theatre Claudia says, "It is always nice to be able to share art in unexpected venues. Growing up, in order to see artwork, I needed to travel into the city. Being able to display work in a suburban location helps bring art to the broader public."

-MORE-
