Oak Cliff- Tyler Davis arts district kicked things off this month with their first block party to celebrate art, music, and food. After an enormous turnout, Second Saturday’s event continues in September with a tremendous night filled with many surprises.
Gallery Bomb, is new art gallery in the edgy Tyler/Davis arts district of Oak Cliff; which is known for it’s diverse culture and history. On September 10th, they will be featuring a widely anticipated exhibition featuring two of the most talented artists in contemporary art today. Joe McSween and Steven Lopez create a beautiful mix of the female figure juxtaposed with rich textured layers seeking to reflect the emotion and inspiration found in the urban environment of modern society.
Joe McSween’s current work is rapidly evolving with new realistic dimension and an expanding use of bright colors and oils. Being a color blind artist might be considered a disadvantage by many, but he chooses to see this as an important advantage to his developmental process. “Most of my earlier works were primarily in black and white focusing on the form in beautiful compositions between positive and negative space. Now that I have a greater knowledge over the years it has helped me gain a higher understanding of using color in conjunction with my balanced compositions to accentuate my painting process as a whole.”
Early on Steven Lopez discovered that Jazz, Funk, Soul and Blues seemed to be ingrained into his very being. Not only did these influences release his creativity, they brought his unique contemporary urban style to life. You can see this in every facet of his creativity. Lopez’s work has been featured with Reebok, Nestle, Dunkin’ Donuts, Coachella, Pepsi, United Way, and Spy Optic. Noted celebrities that have worked with him include Erykah Badu, Akon and Jill Scott.. He has also made appearances on Fuel TV, BBC and the Discovery Channel.
Lopez’s work is inspired by relationships he cultivates with people, music, and art. What he learns from life’s experience is the foundation of his work. His formula is and always will be story, substance and then style.
The MAC's Uptown Trolley Stop Market is proud to introduce the first market of the Fall season; Gems & Junk. Artists will sell hand crafted works, gently used items and other riffraff during our open-air market makeshift yard sale. Gems & Junk offers the Uptown community a chance to meet with local artists, for artists to sell their work and the public to explore another man's treasures. Hang out with us on a Saturday afternoon with ice cold beer, lemonade and plenty of bargains!
Gems & Junk will take place Saturday, September 24th from 2:00-5:00pm in The MAC's parking lot, located at 3120 McKinney Avenue, which is in the Uptown District of Dallas.

As part of the McKinney Avenue Contemporary's community outreach program, the MAC has teamed up with Mercantile Coffee House to extend its contemporary artistic vision and educational support to downtown Dallas. This partnership will promote and support emerging talent with monthly exhibitions throughout the year. Donations from Mercantile Coffee House will benefit artistic programming at the MAC.
The upcoming exhibition at Mercantile Coffee House features the work of Julia McLain. McLain is a local artist from Dallas, Texas. Mclain's professional background includes work in commercial illustration and store front designs and installations. In the 80's and 90's Mclain exhibited in Lower Greenville and Deep Ellum spaces such as Record Gallery, Stout McCourt, Arcadia Bar & Grill, & 8-O's. More recently she has exhibited at the Bath House Cultural Center and Mary Thomas Gallery in the Design District. Mclain participated in "Botany of Desire", an exhibition curated by Greg Metz at UT Dallas in 2011. Julia defines her work as the movement of Cutism. Being the opposite of cubism, Julia describes this movement as "taking broken matter and re-assembling it into a tangible, safe composition." Recycling from past iconography, she recalls her loss of innocence as a young child. The opening reception with the artist will be Saturday August 13, 2011 from 6:00pm-7:30pm and will be on view through September 10th.

Through the MAC's innovative efforts and artistic advisement, visitors to The Mercantile Coffee House will have the opportunity to view and interact with contemporary art in a non-traditional setting. This initiative is congruent with the MAC mission of supporting experimentation and promoting a visual dialogue between the artist and the viewer. Mercantile Coffee House will exhibit a variety of emerging artists and media, enhancing the setting and experience for visitors.

The MAC announces the annual Membership Exhibition, "Meltdown". The MAC Board of Directors requests all members to submit works of art in all media from visual to performance art and literary reading relating to the theme Meltdown. A multi-media exhibition of original paintings and video installations from over a dozen accomplished and innovative national and international artists including Jason Reynaga from Dallas, Penelope Fox from Philadelphia, Kathy Seaboyer originally from Novia Scotia and currently residing in Mexico, Marisa Candaten originally from Australia now based both in Austin and Dallas, Jim Lively from Dallas, Gini Walker from San Diego, Liz London from Dallas and Christoph Fuhrken from Germany. The exhibition will be the public debut of the art video "The Vegetable Can Insurgency of 2011" by Jim Lively.
RISING Gallery with FGIIIART, is proud to present “Wonder Years”, a series of new works by The SourGrapes. “Wonder Years” will take you through the collectives early years and the evolution of their lives as street artists turned fine artists. The show will feature a few early works by the SourGrapes 13 collective, as well as new works by Carlos Donjuan, Ricardo Oviedo, Artura Donjuan, Miguel Donjuan, Eddie Castro, Isaias Torres, and Emily Donjuan. The intent of the show is to dive into their pasts and show the cultural aspect involved with the collective and how their early influences have affected the growth of their work.
The SourGrapes are coming off a successful graffiti installation at the Dallas Contemporary that showcased works that paid homage to fellow graffiti artists that have passed away. Most recently they were signed by Neiman Marcus to produce the storefront windows for several of their locations.
The SourGrapes’ Dallas roots and loyalty are the soul of each of the artists. These influences are apparent in their particular styles in their graffiti work and fine art. They have developed a style that is gaining great respect throughout the graffiti and art communities. They have a respected presence throughout the region and their works are being seen more and more throughout the country.
The Sour Grapes graffiti works can be seen throughout Dallas in the numerous public works projects they have contributed to.
Bowman and Bowman: Experiments in Visual Metaphors Mezzanine Galleries - West and Center

Partners in life and in art, Lee and Carol Bowman present a variegated show of approximately 45 experimental paintings that include watercolor, collage and mixed media. Rich in color and innovative style, their paintings have a spontaneity and freshness that evoke thoughtful and sometimes humorous metaphorical meaning. Much of their art employs a poured paint technique that incorporates solarization and application of a variety of media and collage.
Lee teaches on the art faculty at DallasBaptistUniversity and has also taught at TarrantCountyColleges and Mountain ViewCollege in Dallas. He serves on the board of Arlington Visual Arts Association and is a signature member of the Fort Worth Society of Watercolor Artists.
Carol is also a college instructor, teaching on the Communication faculty at DallasBaptistUniversity and Tarrant County College Southeast. She is a member of the Arlington Visual Arts Association. Marty Walker Gallery celebrates the beginning of summer with an installation of photographically-based work by Ted Kincaid. EVERY DOUBT THAT HOLDS YOU HERE is both a bold step forward, and an elegant embrace of the past by this recognized and respected Texas artist.
Multiple bodies of work by Kincaid combine to form a statement that reads more like a novel in its breadth and scope, weaving together a declaration of the sublime order of the earth and sky. Yet Kincaid has, once again, meticulously engineered a believable photographic record out of pure fiction. Transcendent vistas are fabricated from scratch, moons constructed from pits and stains of a concrete floor, and melancholy seascapes are punctuated with amorphous icebergs from the artist's imagination.
"Ted Kincaid is a photographer who has transcended his camera. Now, he is at the forefront of the digital arts movement, a man who works on the frontier between photography and painting. His mesmerizing, at times ethereal images are all computer-generated, pixel by painstaking pixel. To one degree, or another they are all constructions of things that “exist or not…and can be seen or not,” and that often rely on personal memory. His digital creations are meant to challenge the truth-telling function often ascribed to traditional photographs.
They ask: which truth, and whose?
One thing Kincaid has not evolved beyond is his love of nature, which has been with him always and which has influenced his images in profound ways. The things of the earth—land, vegetation, water, sky—are the focal point of his creations. As he celebrates these wonders, though, he does so with a gravity born of his awareness of humankind’s disrespect for nature's fragility: “[my] work for a number of years has tended more and more to focus on a yearning for what we are losing. And that’s the natural world around us.”

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Denton Poets’ Assembly and the Visual Arts Society of Texas, in conjunction with the City of Denton public libraries, coordinated the 4th annual collaborative “Merging Visions” exhibition.This year, the exhibit is being held in all three branches of the Denton Public Libraries: North, South, and Emily Fowler Central. 20 poets and 38 VAST artists contributed work for this exhibit.The exhibition is free and open to the public.
All poems and artwork are originals created by members of the two groups. Some of the poems are created with the artwork as inspiration, and some are inspirations for the artwork. The pairings will be displayed mounted on the walls of the libraries, available to view during the libraries' open hours.
Images of all art and poetry were captured in a publication, "Collections I," available at no cost at each of the three libraries. This publication was made possible by a grant to VAST from the Denton Benefit League.
This year’s exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Debra Davis, founding member of DPA.
A tribute by karla k. morton, 2010 Texas Poet Laureate, is included in the publication.
The Belmont Hotel in Dallas is pleased to announce the opening reception of Carmen Menza: Shed Some Light. The show will feature the artist’s newest abstract oil pieces on canvas as well as her encaustic works encased within light boxes .An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 12th from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. and a closing reception will be held on Saturday, June 11th from 7:00 – 10:00pm with her band performing on the patio.
Her abstract expressionistic pieces employ varied techniques of building up the surface with texture and pigment and then scraping away and revealing what is underneath.
“In my work I try to discover the parallels between music and the visual arts” states the artist. “I try to find a sense of structure and visual rhythm with color while still following a gestural and improvisational method of application.”
In addition to being a visual artist, Carmen Menza received her BFA in jazz guitar performance from the University of North Texas and is a songwriter, musician and performer. She is a recognized artist as well as an active participant in the Texas art community. When she isn't painting you can find her improvising with her all original pop rock band.
