Winners announced as Virtual Gallery comes to Liverpool Street.

Last month Body Of Art unveiled the first FREE Virtual Gallery with the launch of a major competition, offering artists across the globe the chance to see their work digitally projected in London's Liverpool Street station for one week.

BOA has partnered with Art Below to find twenty masterpieces by twenty different artists, to feature in the Virtual Gallery shown on a 3-metre screen in Liverpool Street, on the Westbound Central Line platform from Monday 18th till 25th April.

Artists who uploaded their work by 1st April were automatically entered into the competition, judged by Ben Moore of Art Below.

With the Virgin London Marathon, the Royal wedding and the Festival of Britain 60th Anniversary Celebrations, as well as Art Below’s 5th Anniversary; the city will be a hive of excitement and activity this April.

BOA's exclusive screening will bring a sense of serene beauty, akin to a real art gallery, to many travelers from all over the world in, what is expected to be, a busy month for the Capital.

The twenty winners will be among the first artists to showcase their work digitally in one of London's busiest stations, potentially reaching 3 million people.

NOTES TO EDITORS

BodyOfArt.com (BOA) is the new social art website for artists and art lovers, launched in January 2011.

BOA has partnered with Art Below to offer the unique competition to its artists in celebration of their Virtual Gallery, the FREE feature unveiled on 14^th March; to revolutionize the way art is viewed online.

Artists can upload between 5-20 images to instantly create unlimited Virtual Galleries for FREE. The tool is a welcome addition to the site, which allows artists to experience their own exhibition – perhaps for the first time.

Artist hangs giant portrait of Gaddafi opposite houses of parliament London

On the 15th March as Big Ben struck 3'oclock One of London's leading young contemporary artists Johan Andersson mounted his latest portrait from his 'Stolen Faces' collection on Art Below's Plinth of Peace opposite the Houses of Parliament.  The painting is a 2 meter by 2 meter oil portrait of Gaddafi.  He wanted to display this piece specifically in this space in the potential build up to Gaddafi's downfall.

Johan Andersson has exhibited at the National Portrait gallery as the youngest ever to be nominated for the BP portrait award. He also recently exhibited in the V&A museum and last summer filmed a T.V series with Sky called 'Art of Survival' which is due to broadcast this summer.

Some Background about the Plinth of Peace.

In November 2010 amidst criticism from Westminster Council Art Below joined forces with Peace Strike to call upon artists to create works that inspire peace and an end to all wars to be displayed on the (2.5m x 2.55m x 1.25m) plinths situated directly opposite the Houses of Parliament.

'It is important that we put this plinth up for auction before Westminster Council destroy it' says Maria.

Maria Gallastegui, founder of Peace Strike has decided that all proceeds from the auction will go to a chidren's center in a war torn part of Iraq. 'It has good potential to heal and show that despite all the tragedy of war and the failings of mankind there are people who care and want to repair the damage in whatever way they can'

Maria has been living on Parliament square as a peace activist since 2006.  In 2009 she created the first plinth with welcomed assistance at the Kew Eco village.  The second one followed shortly in the Summer of 2010.  

On 12th January 2011, organised by Art Below a 3m x 2m canvas of a blown up photograph by Emma Stoner was mounted on the plinth. The photograph captured one of many dramatic moments from 'democracy village' when protesters took over parliament square in Summer 2010 for almost 3 months turning the green into a tented camp.

Polymeni’s work takes an unusual twist on the over-used motif of the female identity, explored through the metaphor of tasseography, or the art of fortune-telling by patterns of ground coffee on the surface of a white cup, that is still widely practiced in her native Greece. Polymeni has created a series of paintings and sculptures evocative of curvy female outlines as though formed by leftover coffee.



The traditional reading of the female body would have it reduced to the womb, a black hole leading to decay and death, irrational like fortune telling or like Polymeni’s uncannily disjointed bodies. Lumpy blacknesses acquire a presence of their own, as the texture of paint and sculptures of wax trigger off an intensely organic response, making the fragments of female bodies seem accidental and insignificant, as though they could have taken any other shape.



Polymeni interrogates and subverts the traditional notion of femininity reduced to confinement and “womanly” pastimes like “telling the coffee” in the afternoon just to while away the time. Not without irony, identity is represented as tragically dissipated with no hope to ever be whole again, constructed and refashioned over and over again by social norms and preconceptions. The female body eventually becomes a scene for political, social and existential statements.



Olympia Polymeni was born in Preveza, Greece in 1975. After graduating in philosophy, she studied painting at Athens School of Fine Arts and moved to London in 2009 to pursue her studies, earning an MA in Fine Art from Central St. Martins College in 2010. She lives and works in East London.

Sartorial’s very own Greta Sarfaty will be revisiting her fascination with a gang of street artists that first made themselves known to the world as the Burning Candy crew. Celebrated for their raw style and disturbing aesthetic, the once marginal Burning Candy paved their way right into the hearts of private collectors and to prestigious auction sales. The likes of Sweet Toof and Cyclops are now bona fide participants of the art scene.

 It’s Time to Go I Have No More Breast... is in a way a retrospect of the glory days of their work that subverted both the streets and art and the last chance to see it in the context of the gallery space where it was first discovered and showcased.
    
Sartorial Contemporary Art is equally delighted to offer lovers of street art an opportunity to own a piece of this controversial work.

CYCLOPSA consummate street professional, Cyclops is ever-enigmatic. His statement accompanying Artistic Vandals merely read "Cyclops
has no friendly bacteria. He is gutless. Cyclops is developing eyeglasses radiation proof. Cyclops is a teenage surgeon or a diamond smashing into the sun blah blah blah".His works can be seen throughout London; Cyclopic skulls and other one-eyed manifestations,
the artist's calling cards. 

JAMES JESSOP (TEK33)
His work borrows heavily from outlandish B-movie imagery and the '60s covers of pulp fiction, this eclectic and eccentric concoction bound with Bronx style tagging. Jessop's work featured in Saatchi's New Blood exhibition. While representing the artist, Sartorial arranged two International solo shows at Thomas Cohn, Sao Paulo and Tom Christoffersen, Copenhagen,
as well as a collaborative show James Jessop vs Harry Pye - It Takes Two, at a newly opened Fishmarket Gallery,Northampton, launched with the assistance of Gretta Sarfaty,

SWEET TOOF
The artist cut his teeth as a graffiti writer in the late '80s. His huge, ghoulish skulls with their salmon-pink gums adorn the sides of many an unsuspecting end-of-terrace house. His works on canvas have been likened to Edward Hopper. But where Hopper employed hints of solitude, Sweet Toof whips out the macabre; masked raiders and chain gangs. Thanks to Sartorial, Sweet Toof is one of an esteemed few Street artists featured in the V&A permanent collection in London.

Reuben Looyenga's premier show at Sartorial Contemporary Art, IL QUOTIDIANO ALTERATO, “The everyday altered” is an exhibition relating to the details that make up the moments of a day. His work assumes the connection between artistic gesture and everyday life. Working outside the studio, the materials used in Reuben's work are based within the everyday.

 

The focus of his work is to find the codes and pattern within the gesture and moment; how the action affects the result. Taking the banal gesture of crumpling paper and magnifying its effect by tracing the creases made, Reuben meticulously outlines the unique chaotic design, generating complex forms and patterns from simple specifications.

 

The work displays the pattern of form, line and composition of everyday action, the generative design of the gesture. In addition to the drawing, Untitled, (47) Sartorial Gallery will be hosting Reuben's installation of e,s,m,w,q: The London Evening Standard, Friday, September 3, 2010. This installation marks the day in which the gallery space was granted for the show.

 

His work with the Evening Standard is effectively an act of reflection on the unique qualities of daily minutiae and asserts a re-dispersal of information that had been read by the masses. The blocking out of information and removal of a single letter suggests a coding of language and the way information is read, the imagery of the work, a constellation of code unique to the date of that issue of newspaper.

 

Reuben Looyenga is a recent MFA graduate from Central St Martins and a new addition to the represented artists of Sartorial Gallery. Born in Canada, his practice has been based throughout, as well as in, London and his work is sold internationally.

Launched in the summer of 2010, hipstamatics.com is a blog dedicated to iPhone Hipstamatic photography.  A beautiful online photo reel, it brings together and showcases some of the very best Hipstamatic shots from around the globe alongside some in-house originals.

People can scroll through the ever-expanding library of Hipstamatic shots and most importantly can share their own photos, submitting them for selection via Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter and e-mail.

 From the hundreds of pictures on the blog the Orange Dot Gallery will showcase 157 prints - the same number as the amount of original analog cameras produced.  A homage to both the history and future of Hipstamatics the exhibition will showcase some of the best works featured on the site to date, from both the submitted snaps and their own specially sourced and exclusive work.

Available to purchase for the duration of the show will be 100 limited 'Hipstamatics Sleeves'. Specially printed for Hipstamatics at The Orange Dot Gallery, the sleeves will hold 10 Hipstamatic prints of your choosing.

A movement has started, opening up an opportunity for people around the globe to produce some outstanding lo fi photography all from their mobile phone.  It's a revolution that looks set to only continue to grow.
