Call to Artists Los Angeles We Are All Palestinians International

We Are All Palestinian

In September as most of you know, Palestinians will appeal to the United Nations to recognize the autonomous State of Palestine - more than 63 years after the U.N. Partition Vote and the end of the 1948 war that punctuated the establishment of Israel.

September will also mark the 10th anniversary of the second Intifada. Moreover, it is the 10th anniversary of 9/11 along with the 10th anniversary of the Levantine Cultural Center.

"We Are All Palestinians" will be a group exhibit of contemporary work (painting, sculpture, video, multimedia) by Arab, Iranian, Armenian, Turkish, Jewish and artists of other ethnic identities who are interested in sharing in the experience and the discourse on what it means to be Palestinian in the 21st century. Every artist regardless of nationality or religion is invited to submit work for consideration. Work that may be described as satirical, political, post-modernist, hyperrealist and other genres will be considered.

"We Are All Palestinians" will run Sept/Oct 2011 in the Inside/Outside Gallery at the Levantine Cultural Center. Artists are responsible for framing and shipping expenses although pick-up and delivery arrangements can be made for local artists.

Artists interested in participating should submit jpgs of their work and a short statement of interest to Jordan Elgrably, jordane@levantinecenter.org.

About the Inside/Outside Gallery
Addressing a void in the American art world, Inside/Outside Gallery is the first gallery in the United States to specialize in presenting contemporary Arab/Middle Eastern artists. Inside/Outside seeks to challenge Orientalist stereotypes by providing the general public with both a physical and online location to view/appreciate art that is representative of the diversity and evolving cultural identity of the Arab/Muslim world and its growing diaspora.

Ashes to Art Update Funeria Art Honors Life Sonoma County

FUNERIA Publishes Price List for 5th Biennial International Ashes to Art® Exhibition

5th biennial Ashes to Art blogsite banner
Happy New Year!

If you have been one of the more than 17,000 visitors to see FUNERIA's Ashes to Art® exhibition online since October 2010, you may have wondered why we haven't posted prices earlier for all of the spectacular original artworks in our 5th biennial exhibition. Here's why:

When neighbors, friends, supporters and hundreds of visitors arrive from nearby cities and throughout the world to attend our international exhibitions at FUNERIA's Sonoma County Art Honors Life® gallery, we believe their special effort deserves not only a warm welcome but a special advantage--one of which is a first look at the prices that each of the artists has set for their own work.

http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=a5jo4tbab&et=1104276352446&s=4217&e=0016xfS6cJbRhOv2ZTH2KAJW9t8Y2N_0E1OtTACINF9Ea0-xfHj20CBU1_Inn6hlCzj1BV6w049Tiro4v9wovwiAHuWQ4vK3KTYGuTnz5QTCDoEz6rKNJ-Vx8QRwD5OSbhWQtz489wcQAsLApuAKoGHhRB5iF0oM1lTwN4ofRdVZsE=
While the Internet offers many interactive opportunities for the curious mind, we know that sculpture and multi-dimensional forms can only be fully appreciated in museums, galleries, in public and private venues where we can experience their mass or their delicacy and feel their impact in relation to ourselves.

Textures, scale, colors and fine details may be represented fairly well online, but stepping into a physical environment, touching the work, recognizing why both the setting and artworks were created, and why a distinguished panel of arts professionals selected them, requires a trip. So, we reward those who travel to our exhibitions with a bonus. They are the first to know that some artists have set surprisingly low prices for their work. They learn that all of the superbly crafted funerary urns and personal memorial artworks, including those at the highest end, are more fairly priced than they expected to find while seeking a unique means to honor a life they've loved.

Now it's your turn to find out that one of the highest scoring artworks among the jurors, which was also the second highest scoring People's Choice contest vote recipient, is a stunning, sophisticated, and exquisitely crafted original artwork priced at $400. We've checked our documents countless times to be sure an extra zero wasn't missing.
You'll also find pieces priced at several thousand more, and we don't always have the very best photos posted to represent them in their full glory. Ask us if they're still available however, and if they are, ask to see better images so that we can help convey some of the details that warrant their price... many times over. We'll tell you about the artists themselves--their inspiration, education and major awards they may have received.

Artists, after all, like to sell and share their work, just as we all hope to be acknowledged for our talents, enjoy comforts, educate our children well and contribute to our communities. FUNERIA is proud to represent artists in the process--to promote, advertise and champion them in any way we can. We know, though, that many more hours, expensive tools and materials were required to create each of these pieces than their price reflects. Imagine not just a 40 hour work week but a hundred and more hours spent in shaping, carving, hammering these beautiful objects. To say nothing of the creative process that precedes their production, to the time spent inspecting, perfecting, to ensuring that their work is the very best it can possibly be.

This is, after all, work that is specifically created to serve a special purpose. It is artwork that is intended to honor a unique life. It may be for an adult with a lifelong passion for exploring the natural world and universe--seeking beauty and studying its secrets; a pet that has retrieved every tennis ball you've thrown, carried you on its back or helped keep you warm at night. It may be for a child who hadn't enjoyed nearly enough of life, but knew the beat and fullness of their mother's heart. It could be for you. What will your urn look like?

So, there you have it. If this isn't a compelling enough statement on the value of seeing, touching and having meaningful, evocative, original art and superbly crafted and designed memorial artwork in your own life, then you'll just have to take a closer look. Open the price list and ask us how we can help you acquire exactly what you want and surely deserve.

Here's to your beautiful life!

Robert Lewis Plein Art Workshop 101 Pacific Grove, CA, USA United States of America

Robert Lewis Plein Art 101
Pacific Grove, CA, USA United States of America

"Plein Air 101: Fundamentals Intensive" will be taught by Robert Lewis. These TWO three-day workshops, in one of the most beautiful places on the California coast, designed to firmly establish your plein air oil painting skills and take you to the next level. This is a fundamentals course for painting plein air landscapes in oil. You will learn the plein air technique used by Robert Lewis and a grounding in sketching, color mixing, working fast, and dealing with the environment.

About the Workshops

Workshop Session One: March 23, 24, 25, 2011
Workshop Session Two: March 28, 29, 30, 2011

Description

This is a fundamentals course for painting plein air landscapes in oil. You will learn the plein air technique used by Robert Lewis and a grounding in sketching, color mixing, working fast, and dealing with the environment. These three-day intensives will take you out of the house and into the world where you will learn useful concepts and techniques designed to maximize your painting success on location and create a solid foundation for your future plein air work. Here are the subjects we will be covering...

* "Field Sketching Essentials"

Teaches the importance of being able to execute quick sketches on location as a powerful means of capturing the composition of the landscape. Effective sketching discipline and practice allows the artist to quickly get the basics of the landscape blocked in, reducing the details to major areas, and recognizing the relative values. Students will complete about 20 pencil sketches in a less than two hours for the purpose of gaining a lot of experience while learning not to become attached to the sketch as a "drawing".

* "The Secret Code of Color"

Explores a few traditional color palettes and teaches color mixing and laying out the palette logically. Explores four color palettes, the Zorn, the old masters palette, Monet's palette (according to him), and a Lewis' palette which uses elements of all of these palettes.

* "Immediacy: The Quick Study in Oil"

Building upon the quick pencil sketching practice and the color work we have done, this segment teaches the student to quickly block in basic shapes and prepare to add details, working from larger to smaller brushes and taking advantage of a leveraged palette of colors. Quick studies in oil can remain standalone paintings or be used as a basis for a final piece. A demo by the instructor will be followed by painting along with the students. You will learn how to work fast and loose. Watch a Demo.

 * "Artist's Demo Painting"

A demo painting using what we have learned and introducing the preparation of the canvas and using the pencil sketch and building upon the quick oil sketch technique to begin the painting. Finish the painting and follow up with a Q&A.

* "Putting It All Together in a Plein Air Paint Out"

On location, we put all the ingredients together in painting sessions on location in which the instructor paints along with the students and offers individual feedback during the paint out.

* "Critique"

After the main body of work, Robert will take time to privately critique the work of any artist that asks for it. Robert's hope to offer useful suggestions and give encouragement.
Tuition

$280 per person, payable in advance, for each three-day workshop; a total of at least 18 hours of instruction per workshop. Register online with your credit card or PayPal account.
There are TWO workshop sessions available:

Workshop Session One: March 23, 24, 25

Santa Barbara-based Keith Puccinelli uses an irreverent quick wit, modest materials, and tableaux to broach the conflictbetween the preciousness of life and man’s disregard for life during times of war, to create a kind of carnival of sorrow.
The strong juxtaposition of materials and a passion for wordplay often brings a sense of humor to glaze or emphasize the serious or tragic presented in the work.

A resident of Ventura, Keith Puccinelli received his B.F.A. from San José State University, San José, CA. In 1983, heestablished Puccinelli Designs, ushering in a 20-year period of national and international recognition for his commercial work. Concurrently, Puccinelli produced an impressive body of artwork, and took part in numerous exhibitions inSouthern California including the Sonotube® Forms: Contemporary Art and Transport exhibition at the Santa Barbara

Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, CA. Most recently, his work was featured in a solo exhibition, curated by Meg Linton, entitled Keith Puccinelli: The Wondercommon at the Ben Maltz Gallery, Otis College of Art and Design, Los
Angeles, CA.
