All 2D Artists Apply For “Liquid” Art Competition – September 2010

Light Space & Time – Online Art Gallery presents a Juried Competition, in which 2D artists from around the world are called upon to make online submissions for the theme “Liquid” for inclusion into the October 2010 online group exhibition. Light Space & Time encourages entries from all 2D artists regardless of where they reside and regardless of their experience or education in the art field.

A group exhibition of the top five finalists will be held online at the Light Space & Time Art Gallery during the month of October. Awards will be for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. In addition, 2 artists will recognized with Honorable Mention awards. The theme for September is “Liquid”. The submission process for artists ends September 29, 2010.

All winners will be selected, announced and featured on the Light Space & Time website on October 1, 2010 and remain online in the gallery through October 30, 2010. Thereafter, the artworks will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives with links to the artist’s websites.

Exhibit Theme and Title:   The Power of The Orishas
This art exhibit will explore the spiritual and visual interpretations of the Orisha by various artists representing the orisha origins of West Africa, and the Yoruba impact in the Caribbean and its Santeria practices. Santeria is a religious manifestation, which recognizes the direct contact of human beings with their ancestors and with forces of nature. It contains two basic concepts: Ache and ebbo. Ache is divine power. By mediating through Ache, anything imaginable is possible. All the ceremonies and rituals are made to obtain this divine power of the Orisha. With Ache all the problems can be solved and any kind of obstacle can be overcome. Ebbo is the sacrifice by which Orishas can free the person from diseases, witchcraft, and prison. Ebbo could be gifts to the Orishas such as flowers, fruits, candles or favorite dishes of the Orishas. Many ethnic Yoruba were taken as slaves to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Venezuela and the rest of the New World (chiefly in the 19th century, after the Ọyọ empire collapsed and the region plunged into civil war), and carried their religious beliefs with them. These concepts were combined with preexisting African-based cults, Christianity, Native American mythology, and Kardecist Spiritism into various New World lineages. Through art we are able to explore and express the various aspects of the practice and beliefs.

ELIGIBILITY:
This Call for Entries is open to ALL Artists working in all mediums with the knowledge and understanding of the Orisha’s. Experimental and mixed techniques are welcome.  2-D and 3-D works are eligible and must be limited to FRAMED OR INSTALLATION SIZE OF 24 x 30 inches.

ENTRY FEE:
The entry fee is $25 for the first image. Additional images may be submitted for $10 each image thereafter.

IMAGE PREPARATION:
Prepare your images as required before beginning the submission process. Submissions are only accepted via email attachments. Submissions as, CD, or prints are not allowed in this exhibition and will not be returned. Digital image files must meet the following specifications: JPEG files largest dimension should be 1280 pixels (width or height).

File names may contain a maximum of 25 characters, not counting .jpg. The file name may not include characters such as #, $, &, periods or other similar characters as part of the file, and should start with your last name, then your first initial, and then the name of the file. There will be only one period in the file name, just prior to the file extension (i.e. Smith_J_filename.jpg). It's important to follow these instructions about the file name.

ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION:
On or about September 10, 2010 everyone will receive an email with the acceptance notification. If your work has been one of the accepted you will be notified with a delivery date of the works. All packaging, handling, delivery, Insurance and postage fees are the sole responsibility of the artist. A date will be given for hand delivery of works, all courier handling must be sent in reusable packaging with prepaid postage attached. The Urban Individualists are not responsible for delivery of any artwork. Late stocking fees a/o ownership/disposal of works will be incurred if works are not picked up by deadline submitted.


JURORS:
Helene Ruiz a Surreal Artist who Founded, The Urban Individualists an Artists collective in 2008 and has been painting since early childhood. Her Father was the one who encouraged her to express herself through the arts.  He being and artist himself was her teacher, mentor and support. In 1973 she was awarded a scholarship to attend an arts program at Metropolitan Museum of Art where she encountered  Salvador Dali… this left her inspired and ready to take on the world and her passion for surrealism. Her works reflecting life, hardships and reality is very reminiscent of Frida Kahlo’s free expression of her pain. She has exhibited her works in numerous shows from New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New Orleans, the Caribbean, Florida, Maryland and Virginia. .Helene has been curating for five years and is known for thinking outside of the box. With her most recent shows of Rhythm & Time, Hard Hearts, Masquerade/False Faces and so many others, have left a mark in the creative industry for life. In 2005 she received an artist’s grant from the Wheeler Foundation. In 2010 she recieved an artist's grant from the NYFA  Salmagundi fund .  In 2008 some of her works were published. One being "Life Lives Within" was published in "GAIIA THE LIVING PLANET" by redbubble, the other two entitled, "Tick Tock" in "Heart and Soul" by younty younity and the other "The Heart Yearns" in "Compassion, Courage and  Friendship" by redbubble. Between 2009 up until the present many of her works were also published in "On the issues" a new york city feminist magazine, and in Pink Panther Magazine for women.. Helene Ruiz is bringing artists together from around the world for a cause … ART, Healing, Creativity, Freedom of Expression and as a voice!


Mia Roman Hernandez is an internationally recognized visual and Mixed Media Artist, Poet, and Educator whose visual works have been exhibited and are part of private collections in London, Mexico, Nevada, California, Florida, Puerto Rico and throughout the United States. She published her first limited edition poetry book in 2009 simply titled “ A Path Paved in Words “ She has performed her poetry in such places as the famous Nuyorican Poets Café in NYC, The Notice Lounge, World Culture Open and at several visual arts galleries and lounges throughout the US. Her paintings reflect spirituality, culture, humanism, reality and speak of advocacy for women and current events. She currently teaches Mixed Media Art at The Children’s Art Carnival in NYC to the youth. Mia, Founder of Art by Mia and Chamaca Arts a creative forum for Women and former Producer of Boricuation Radio and TV has curated several shows in and out of the NY area including but not limited to … Visions of Puerto Rico, Latinas En Foco, Women’s Journey, United for A Cure and FEMICIDE in NYC in 2009 which brought International attention to the murders of Women. She is currently working on an October 2010 show that will showcase the Global voices of Women through Paper, Pen and Monologues. Her works have appeared in numerous exhibitions and reside in many private collections locally and internationally. Mia Roman Hernandez a self taught Artist on a MISSION!

EXHIBITION PIECES:
All accepted works submitted for exhibition must be framed and ready to hang. Gallery wrapped canvas MUST have painted edges and all installation pieces MUST supply all hanging and installation materials and instructions. Installation pieces not to exceed 24 x 30” in size no exceptions will be made. The Urban Individualists recognizes that some work is nontraditional and incorporates the framing as an integral part of the presentation.


SALES:
All work accepted for the gallery show must be for sale. The gallery will receive a 30% commission on the sale of any work so please price your work accordingly.

The BECA Foundation is pleased to present SHIFT, an exhibition of new works of art + design featuring works that express, reveal, embody or address a change or movement on some level – be it social, cultural, physical, metaphysical, political, technological or any other relative shift. For the purpose of this Call, submitting artists, architects and designers are encouraged to freely interpret the meaning of the word ‘shift’.

Those at least 18 years of age from any country are eligible to submit their works for consideration according to the guidelines below. The BECA Foundation will host the exhibition at New Studio A.D., a new multi-functional studio, exhibition and event space located in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. The space allocated for the exhibition is 650 sqft (60 sq meters) with a ceiling height of 14 feet (4.3 meters) allowing the exhibition to fill a full 9,100 cubic feet (258 meters cubed) of viewing space. Of the entries submitted, three individual artists, architects, designers, duos, groups or collectives will be selected by BECA Foundation directors + advisors to receive the exhibition opportunity which will run from 

September 1–14, 2010 with an opening reception from 6 – 8pm on September 3^rd, during Downtown Albuquerque’s First Friday ArtsCrawl.

This is a multimedia and multidisciplinary exhibition without limitation therefore all works will be considered, including but not limited to: site-specific installations, painting, sculpture, mixed-media, drawing, printmaking, fiber, textiles, illustration, digital art, interactive design, photography, video/new media, film, performance art, music and sound focused works, 3D animation, graphic design, product design, furniture design, haute couture fashion + accessories, architectural interventions/designs and functional art, etc.  In other words, all creative culminations are welcome.

With a growing international BECA network of now 30,000, it is more important than ever for BECA to ensure that in addition to hosting the physical exhibition, the exhibition also be made available online at www.BECAICAD.org for those who are unable to attend in person. Call For Entry: AIR 2010 Amorphous Image Race – Deadline: Open

This open call represents a NEW creative and collaborative art space opportunity to encourage innovation and experimentation among international artists, designers and art students by challenging their talent and skills into an unexplored form of expression that will fresh thinking and broad activities, to look ahead.

An effective image is important to the success of art as any other element. An Amorphous Image Process is a new element. One that challenge your imagination on the threshold of a provocative precision, to examine a new intended media output and achieves significant breakthroughs in tomorrow’s image view.
The schemes of art and artists are always confronting the challenge of visual processes. AIR 2010 AMORPHOUS IMAGE RACE, approach art for the knowledge benefit of development. International artists, designers and art students are specially invited to explore how amorphous images are processed to innovate their concepts of image theory.

Participants could be for example: an artist working with a different approach toward thinking, in admitting if what he wants to build expects to determine what reality is and what amorphous reality is; an art or design student producing a series of “images” with a correlation into an amorphous concept. The possibilities are endless, because amorphous thinking in visual terms is an inextricably bound up with sensation and perception. In many ways, how we think is how we see and vice versa. The same mechanisms operated on both the perceptual and the intellectual level, so, these inevitably terms like concept, judgement and conclusion, have to be applied to the work of senses on the use of An Amorphous Image Process.

AIR 2010 AMORPHOUS IMAGE RACE, is now challenging international artists, designers and art students to act corporately and work in tempo, developing a further dedicated work at the intersection of art and science based on An Amorphous Image Process, regarding each field for an open and systematic enquiry into an artistic experience, that will serve as platform to develop “new art”, and consequently get it within a context of relevant critical discourse and discussions to research and to develop An Amorphous Image Process for the future, to move forward, to improve situations, to assert individuality, and to get on with life.

Submission details
AIR 2010 AMORPHOUS IMAGE RACE encourages and welcomes the participation of people from all backgrounds and does not discriminate with regard to race, sex, sexual preference, disabilities, religion, marital status, or nation of origin in its acceptance policies. There is no entry fee.
Submitted artworks should be an enquiry based on the constructive and creative process, the cognitive knowledge, instinct and intuition, to encourage and to explore the speculative and the experimental nature into the notions of image place, image space and image event.

The web call is addressed to all participants with no limitations in terms of technique adopted, to send via email (1-3) images with high resolution (Minimum 100 DPI, in GIF format), provided that they are created or completed by means of An Amorphous Image Process, and a 50-words about yourself, with the aim of collecting participants works, there are no formal deadlines; however, much of the program will occurs in September and October. All copyrights remain the property of the artists.
After artwork for submission, the identification process will be carried out, allowing the selection of the artworks forming an exhibition to be display in a web gallery, and in a site published magazine in November.

Objective of AIR 2010 AMORPHOUS IMAGE RACE
· To animate international artists, designers and art students to create works specifically based on An Amorphous Image Process.
· To elevate An Amorphous Image Process as a workshop to understand the visual effect firstly in the observer through his perception and then the image itself by introducing something totally original and visionary.
· To explore significant breakthroughs in art knowledge and understanding by challenging existing models, perceptions, research methods or modes of thought based on An Amorphous Image Process as a laboratory
· To encourage practitioners from different creative disciplines to collaborate and exchange the complexity and unpredictability of An Amorphous Image Process and its working representation.
· To create a different kind of An Amorphous Image Network (AAIN) with local and foreign institutions for creative and thinker’s collaboration based on the evolution of Amorphous Images, its research and development as a long-term project.

Cheney Stadium Public Artwork Request for Qualifications

Deadline: August 16, 2010
Cheney Stadium will undergo major renovations this fall. As part of the renovation, the Tacoma Arts Commission has two opportunities available for artists or artist teams to create site-responsive artwork that will complement the northwest feel of the stadium.

Opportunity 1: BUDGET $50,000Eligibility: Artist(s) must reside in the South Sound, defined as the following counties of Washington State: Pierce, Kitsap, or Thurston. Applicants may apply as a single artist or as an artist team. Applicant must be professional artist, 18 years or older and not a full-time student.

Opportunity 2: BUDGET $160,000

Eligibility: Artist(s) must reside in the contiguous Western United States and Canada, defined as the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming, or British Columbia. Applicants may apply as a single artist or as an artist team. Applicant must be professional artist, 18 years or older and not a full-time student.

Art at Work Month Activities

Deadline: August 16, 2010

The Tacoma Arts Commission is seeking submissions of arts activities happening during our ninth annual Art at Work: Tacoma Arts Month this November. We are looking for a variety of activities spanning all categories of art including but not limited to music, visual art, literary art, dance, theater, and film.
If you will be hosting an exhibition, performance, class, workshop, reception, lecture, tour, artists’ market, celebration, meeting, presentation, or any other programming, let us know. We will list your arts event in the Art at Work: Tacoma Arts Month brochure for free; 15,000 copies of this brochure are distributed throughout the region. We will also be promoting the many events going on throughout the month in a poster, special promo pieces, advertisements and articles in local and regional papers and magazines, and at www.ArtAtWorkTacoma.com.

To qualify, your arts activity must be located within the City of Tacoma limits and occur during the month of November.

Tacoma Studio Tour

Deadline: July 12, 2010

The Tacoma Arts Commission is seeking professional artists who are willing to open their studios to the public for our ninth annual Studio Tour, one of the features of Art at Work: Tacoma Arts Month this November. Studios will be open on Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7 from 10 am to 4 pm (artists can choose to be open on Saturday, Sunday, or both days).

Applicants will be juried by a sub-committee of the Tacoma Arts Commission and selected based on the quality of artwork and the overall diversity of the work presented, as well as geographic diversity of the studios. To qualify, your studio must be located within the City of Tacoma limits. A studio is defined as a location where artwork is created on a consistent basis.  
The Tacoma Arts Commission will publish a map and publicity materials featuring the studios. The studio tours are free to both the artists and visitors.

Spaceworks Tacoma

Applications accepted on a rolling basis and as more spaces become available.

Opportunities are available for artists, fledgling creative entrepreneurs, organizations and community groups to transform vacant spaces and empty storefronts in downtown Tacoma with a diverse range of art installations and performances, artist residencies, creative enterprise and pop-up events. Interested parties must have an artistic idea and a solid plan for making temporary use of no- and low-cost space, and be interested in participating in the revitalization of downtown.

Spaceworks Tacoma offers four tracks for participation:

• Artscapes is a temporary public art program with opportunities for visual and performance-based works in Tollefson Plaza, and installations in interior window storefronts.
• The artist residency program offers the chance to pursue projects, ranging from one to six months in duration, in any discipline.
• Creative enterprise provides designers, crafters, consultants and other fledgling entrepreneurs with the chance to test new products and services in a physical space.
• Pop-up events might include poetry slams, ad-lib opera or a record release party. Thinking outside the box is encouraged.

Call to Artists: CAM Biennial 2010 Oregon

GUIDELINES

All Oregon artists are invited to participate in CAM Biennial 2010 to be held at the Coos Art Museum from October 1 through November 27, 2010. This exhibition provides artists residing in Oregon the opportunity to exhibit their works to the public within an Art Museum without the extensive curating or jurying process. CAM Biennial 2010 will be displayed throughout all 5 of Coos Art Museum’s Galleries.
OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION: Friday, October 1, 2010 from 5 – 7pm. Open to the Public
CAM Biennial 2010 will open with a reception for all the exhibiting artists at the Coos Art Museum on Friday, October 1, 2010 from 5pm until 7pm.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD: Winner will be given a solo exhibition at CAM in 2011
Voting for a “People’s Choice” selection will be conducted by Museum visitors during the entire run of the exhibition through the closing at 4:00 pm on Saturday, November 27, 2010. The winner will be contacted by December 3, 2010. Winner’s exhibition proposal must meet Coos Art Museum Exhibition’s Committee criteria prior to installation at Coos Art Museum in 2011.

ARTISTS ELIGIBITILY: Artists who live in Oregon; recent works 3 years old or less.
Original works of art created in the past 3 years (2007 – 2010) by artists who reside in Oregon are eligible for entry. No commercial artwork, or reproductions of any kind will be accepted.

ELIGIBLE ART MEDIUMS: Allowed with the following criteria
• Paintings – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
• Drawings – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
• Hand pulled prints, etchings, serigraphs – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.

Ready For Display: All works must ARRIVE ready for hanging (matted, mounted and framed, well-anchored, substantial wires are required) with a 48″ in any direction limitation.

GUIDELINES

Eligibility

Open to all artists—painters, sculptors, photographers and printmakers—over 18 years of age. Artists are invited to submit up to three original works of art on any theme related to fish, sport fishing or the fishing industry. Works selected by jurors from submitted entries will be chosen on the basis of creative excellence and quality of execution. All works must be original and completed within the last two years. Coos Art Museum’s “Fish and Fishing Art” jurors will be the final authority on eligibility. Accepted works meant for wall hanging must be ready with all necessary hardware in place.
General Rules Artists may submit up to three (3) entries, with a non-refundable fee of $15 for the first entry and $10 each for the second and third submissions. These entries must have been created within the last 2 years (2009-2010) with an unframed size limitation of four (4) feet by eight (8) feet and a weight limitation of 50 pounds.

Submissions can be either digital files or slides.

• Digital files must be in jpg format minimum of 300 dpi at approximately 8” x 10” all on one CD-ROM. All CD’s must be labeled, on the outside, with the artist’s name, title of the work, medium, date completed, and size of the collages/assemblages. Name the electronic files as follows:

Abbreviate as needed on the electronic file name, but be sure the entry form has complete information.

• NO SLIDE SHOWS, FLASH FILES, THUMBNAILS etc.
• NO SUBMISSIONS VIA EMAIL WILL BE ALLOWED

• Slides must be 2″ by 2″ mounted, each marked with the artist’s name, title of the work, medium, date completed, and size of the painting.  Please denote the top of the work on the slide and submit in a plastic jacket.  No glass-mounted slides will be accepted.

• If you are submitting a work that is part of a series, the submitted piece MUST be unique and distinguishable from any of your other works of art. Works that have previously been exhibited at Coos Art Museum are NOT eligible.

All information on the original entry as to title, size and price must remain the same on the accepted entry. Entries must be original in concept, composition and execution. Artwork created under the supervision of an instructor is not eligible. Artwork must not be copied, in part or wholly from any published or copyrighted work.
Deadline for submissions is a postmark of October 9, 2010.
Send submissions, completed forms and entry fee to Coos Art Museum, 235 Anderson Ave. Coos Bay, OR 97420. Include with your entry a self-addressed, 6×9 stamped envelope (SASE) for submissions CD and slide return and acceptance letters with shipping information. Notice of acceptance will be sent by October 22, 2010.

Winning an Award

The winning First Place will receive a cash prize of $500.
The winning Second Place will receive a cash prize of $350.
The winning Third Place Award will receive a cash prize of $250.
4 Honorable Mention ribbons will also be awarded.

Sales

The Museum will make resumes of artists whose works are accepted available to visitors during the exhibition. Works may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale to Coos Art Museum. The artist is to be paid three weeks from end of show. Please price your works with this in mind.  Your entry confirms all terms of this agreement.
Delivery and Pickup of Art Works
Artists whose work is accepted must have artwork delivered to the museum via carrier service at their own expense for arrival between November 29 and December 03, 2010.  Hand delivered work will be received at the museum on Friday, December 03 2010 between 10 am and 4 pm, Saturday, December 04, 2010 between 1 pm and 4 pm and Sunday, December 05, 2010 between 10 am and noon. Coos Art Museum will not pay for return shipment of artwork. Artists must make pre-paid arrangements to have their work returned to them, or may pick up their work in person at the museum on Saturday, February 19, 2011 from 4-6pm and Sunday February 20, 2011 between 10am and noon.

General Specifications
Two-dimensional works must be wired and ready for hanging and be no more than four (4) feet by eight (8) feet, excluding the frame. If done on a gallery-wrapped canvas, the art must encompass the sides of the canvas. Non-hanging pieces must be no larger than eight (8) feet in any direction, no heavier than 50 pounds and ready for display. If special display is required, directions must be included with the piece. All work must be labeled on the back or underside with the artist’s name, address, and phone number.  Labels must also show the work’s Title, Medium, Date of Creation, and (retail) value of the piece as set by the artist. Art is insured while in the museum from November 21, 2009 through February 14, 2010.
The Selection Committee will have three Jurors:

Juror: Don McMichael

Juror Don McMichael served 20 years in the United States Coast Guard before retiring to pursue a career in art. While in the Coast Guard he developed a deep respect and admiration for the ocean and the underwater world of marine wildlife. Best known for his depictions of whales and other marine mammals Don has exhibited his art throughout the United States and abroad, and has received awards from such notable exhibitions as the Audubon Society and Mystic Seaport during their annual international shows. He is also an artist member of the prestigious American Society of Marine Artists, artist member of the United States Coast Guard Artist’s Group, avid supporter of the Cousteau Society, Center for Whale Studies and numerous other marine conservation organizations.

Juror: Anne Sobbota

Juror Anne Sobbota is the owner/manager of SAGE Gallery in Bandon, Oregon. Founded in 2007 SAGE represents about 85 artists from the West Coast and beyond. Anne is a graduate of California State University in Los Angeles with a BA degree in art. She taught photography and television production in Corona, California for ten years and art history at Pasadena Community College and Glendale Community College. In addition to being an avid photographer she is also a specialist in the history of photography.

Juror: Andy Charles

Juror Andy Charles is a resident of North Bend, Oregon and an avid outdoorsman. A largely self-taught artist Andy has been painting and drawing since his boyhood days in Maryland. Before moving to Oregon he served as Artist in Residence at the Carnegie Art Center in Walla Walla, Washington. Occasionally Andy has done commissioned illustrations including a children’s book for the chief diver of the Cousteau Expeditions. He works in a variety of media including prismacolor, watercolor and oil. His works are noted for precise detail and a wide range of subjects including travel, history, surfing, wildlife and fishing scenes.

“Coos Art Museum is the cornerstone of visual arts on Oregon’s Southern Coast.  Through collections, exhibitions and educational programs, we are building an arts and cultural community and promoting the appreciation, understanding and expression of visual art.” Located on the scenic southern Oregon Coast Coos Art Museum is the 3rd oldest art museum in Oregon. CAM traces its roots to the Coos Artist League, active since 1950. Members of the League conducted early operations in storefront locations before moving to a Carnegie Library Building. In 1982 Coos Art Museum members, acquired and remodeled the old US Post Office building, a historical art deco structure built in 1937. The Museum has five active galleries totaling almost 5,000 sq feet of display space and a 540 piece Permanent Collection of mid-20th Century and contemporary American art.

The City of Sandy, Oregon seeks to commission a qualified artist or artist team specializing in murals to create an outdoor mural for the back of the old Thriftway building, next to the Sandy Historical Museum. The mural will be adhered to an exterior cinderblock wall of an existing structure. The approximately 12-foot by 60-foot wall is located adjacent to a new downtown Plaza--a public gathering place that will include a sculptural water feature.

The Sandy Mural Project provides an opportunity to connect to the City's past, present and future. Opportunities for mural themes include but are not limited to: celebrating the City's historic past as a stop on the Barlow Road, it's proximity to the Sandy River, and as a gateway to the Mt. Hood region.

Storefronts Seattle is a pilot program to make vacant storefront space available for creative uses with the possibility of future expansion to other Seattle neighborhoods. The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, NE offers 2- to 8-week residencies year-round for writers, visual artists, and music composers. Housing, studio space, $100/week stipend are provided. Approximately 50 residencies are awarded per year.
