Juicing For Chronic Fatigue Day 7

I have made it a week on my Juice Fast.  Seven days on a juice fast seems like a month in regular days. To say this is easy, it is not.  Also for weight loss, I think there are other ways to achieve results that are not so rigid.   One example would be just to go straight into clean eating.  I am an advocate however for everyone adding juicing to their daily life.  We really fall short of the vitamins and minerals we need each day.  As Americans we have a huge problem with obesity and disease.  We are a nation of overweight and malnourished people.  Think about that for a minute... Most people that are malnourished are skeletal, from countries where there is no food.  Here it is the opposite, we have to much food with little to no nutritional value.

I started out this journey because I have been sick for a long time.  It has progressively gotten worse.  I was fine by all medical standards, yet I had a bevy of symptoms. Some of my symptoms cleared immediately upon fasting.  The small acne spots I would wake up with every day are gone. I have had no burning in my hands and feet.  The black patches on my shins have lessened.  I swear, as weird as it sounds, my eyesight is better.  I am not freezing cold all the time.  I have more energy. These are good things.

I am not going to proclaim that I am all the way cured.  My main problem that I am trying to combat is post exertional malaise.  Basically every time I exercise I end up sick for two days.  I have been active my whole life, and this is something that really bothers me.  I am going to start back slowly into more vigorous exercise, something besides yoga, and see what happens. I will have to eat healthily for the rest of my life.  Although my diet was not bad before, I can see where it was lacking in  a major way.

I have had every combo of juice I think I can imagine now, and really-- at the end of the day, juice is juice.  You have to suck it up and get used to it.  Get in a zone, get over it all.

My weight has hit a level of homeostasis.  It's not going anywhere, which is fine.

Conclusional  info

If have a chronic illness I think juice fasting, UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION, is a good thing to do.  It also serves as a form of elimination diet where you can add one thing back at a time to see how your body reacts.  You should juice about 80% vegetables and 20% fruit.

I am going to stay on my fast for another 3 days at least if not 7, but I am going to now incorporate salads and fruits whole, not juiced.

While I was juicing I thought of some funny things-- you know you are on a juice fast when:

You cry when juice drips into the sink from peeling a lemon
Number two, you are sick as hell of peeling that lemon
When you see a green drink you feel somewhat dejected as opposed to a bright orange one where you start to smile
You have spent hours thinking of uses for leftover pulp, you even tried to feed it to your dog
You have actually rejuiced pulp
You find strange spots on cabinets in the kitchen from where fruits and veg have shot out of the juicer
You KNOW without a doubt that you can not stick any fruit pit in your juicer, you have a black eye to prove it
You Think you have turned into the Plant from Little Shop of Horrors!

The usual info I include!

So if you've been keeping up, I've started juicing for health reasons. I have had a fatigue problem for a long time, but it's gotten worse and now I can't even exercise. This is the worst for me, as I love to be active. I watched the movie Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead and was immediately motivated to start juicing.

My plan right now is to do this for 7 days. I've been to the doctor and most everything shows up fine, that's why I'm taking this approach. You should always consult a doctor if you plan on doing any plan like this. I have a physician on duty ;).

Chronic Fatigue, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Malaise and a Juicer

I'm going to tell you a story, one of a chick, who just happens to be me.  The point of this exercise is not only to document, but to share a story that might help others. I have been sick as long as I can remember.  Sick as in I feel like shit all the time.  My labs are all pretty normal and if anything is out of range, its mainly just borderline (read non conclusive for anything).  This has been going on for YEARS!  I have had the mercury removed from my teeth, I have eaten all organic, I have gone vegan, eaten all protein.  I have changed all products that have unnatural substances in them-- ie, shampoos, deodorant, toothpaste, lotion.  You name it, I have probably tried it.

My symptoms range from weird to downright strange.  Anything, and I mean anything that touches my skin makes whelps.   This is especially true if it is paper or wood, I have concluded all must have chemicals in them.  I have crops of tiny pinhead acne that comes and goes on my chin frequently.  I have bilateral burning and itching in my extremities, fatigue, sometimes blurred vision, dizziness,  frequent headaches, cold hands and feet, low body temperature, chronically dry splotches on my shins, intolerance to alcohol (this never stops me from having a drink), two day hangovers, and the worst of worst-- post exertional malaise. This means that now every time I exercise I get sick.  I have always been an active person, I love running, biking, tennis, walking and generally anything outdoors.  This has been all but shut down now.  I do yoga and that's it.  And let me tell you I'm pissed!  This is no way to be!

I got a rash bringing home my juicer even-- from the box touching my arm.

I had some friends in town a few weekends ago and they mentioned this show about a guy that had been juicing. I didn't think to much of it, but while flipping through movies last night, it caught my attention.  I remembered hearing about it and so I watched the trailer.  This was that movie my friends had told me about--- I watched.  I watched some more, and more and more.  Holy moly, this dude was me.  He didn't have the same thing I did, I wasn't obese, but we were the same-- we were both sick.

If you have not seen it already you must watch Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. This film is good for everyone to see, but if you have a chronic illness it is a MUST!  Rent it now on your on demand movies.  It is under new releases.

Here is the URL http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/

That was all it took for me.  To see Joe Cross's story and the story of the truck driver was all I needed.  I went and bought a juicer. I'm going on a juice fast to reboot my system.

The Breville juicer from the film was sold out everywhere so I bought a Jack Lelanne.  Don't you freaking love Jack Lelanne?  I do!

I then went and bought a ton of organic fruits and veggies. I got home and my damn juicer was broken.  I trekked back to the store and bought a Cuisinart juicer--- I could have ordered the Breville, but I was ready already.

So here we go with the juicer.  Rule A number one: Don't let your husband near the juicer unless you want to clean your kitchen for an hour.

Here is a recipe for the slightly hot green drink I made.  It was really pretty darn tasty.
Again I used all organics

1 bunch of kale
1 lemon pealed
1 pear
4 stalks of celery
2 tomatoes
2 green onion stalks
3 large carrots
1 hatch green pepper (this gives a big kick- reduce or omit if you want)
1/2 a teaspoon of garlic
a dash of sea salt

This green drink was good, and Erick says he is full.

I am going to keep you updated on progress in the hopes that these posts can help someone.

Juice Fasting for Chronic Fatigue Day 6

I have made it to day six.  I am pretty proud of myself.  I can tell you one thing.  I want food.  I want to eat a sandwich, or pizza, tacos, anything.  :/

But alas, I will not.  It's hard when you want to eat something.  I have not had this problem until now.  I have to regroup my thoughts and get back in alignment.  I have not fallen off the plan, and I do not intend to do it now.

They say real Detox of bad things happens from day 8 - 15.  I want to keep going and see.

Scale, not really moving, which is fine.  My metabolism has probably moved to a snails pace.

Here is a recipe for a juice I made that is really delicious.
1/2 beet
1/2 a bunch celery
2 lemon
15 grapes
5 carrots
...1 green onion
1/2 hatch green pepper
1 pear
1 sweet potato
1 handful of cilantro and 4 tomatoes
The usual info I include!

Juicing for Chronic Fatigue Day 5

FOR MY ART FOLLOWERS:  I will be posting more art info soon.  Right now I am documenting this fast, but will resume calls and interviews soon, I promise!

Fuck, I'm tired today. It might be because I swam yesterday instead of keeping my happy ass inside the house. Oh well. Yesterday I felt fine. I've decided I can not juice kale, it makes me feel to weird. I guess I'll just make kale chips for E out of the leftovers.

I have somehow inspired my mom and brother to do this too. So that makes four of us. My mom, E, me and my brother.

Results so far:

My brother has no acid reflux, medicine free 3 days, he has been on medication for 2 years

My mom had a GI bleed from medication, prednisone, she is medicine free, no pain whatsoever

E has lost 10 lbs

I have no tiny breakouts on my chin every morning. My skin is soft. And besides the tiredness I do feel better.

Scale is the same today, which is fine.

Morning juice of the day, Pear Cucumber and More.

4 celery
10 strawberries
1 pear
1 cucumber
1 orange
1 sweet potato

The usual info I include!

Chronic Fatigue Juice Fasting Day Four

FOR MY ART FOLLOWERS:  I will be posting more art info soon.  Right now I am documenting this fast, but will resume calls and interviews soon, I promise!
Well I feel ok today. I had a bump in energy yesterday, but after my dinner drink I was really dizzy again. I'm starting to wonder if juicing kale is giving me the spins. I'm going to leave it out today and see. I've been putting half a beet with the rest of the veggies and it works quite well. Making it to day four was hard, but like I said, if I can feel fine I could go on easily. I have been ok on wanting food until my friends came over and started talking about the burger king chicken sandwich. Years ago that used to be my hangover fix. Something about that damn sandwich makes me want to eat it, like now.

Some good things:

My skin is clear, no more tiny spots in the morning

I'm getting used to the juices

I've only made one bad batch

Sneaky tip, rejuice pulp!

E made juice last night and decided it was a lot more difficult than he thought. Really? It's always easy when it shows up, ruby red, green or bright orange in a nice glass for you-- right...

I have no idea what he put in it except cantaloup. It was good though!

Scale shot. Back to normal. If your just catching this, I'm juicing for health, but always throw in a scale pic.

Juicing for Chronic Fatigue Day Mid Three Update

FOR MY ART FOLLOWERS:  I will be posting more art info soon.  Right now I am documenting this fast, but will resume calls and interviews soon, I promise!

Update Mid Day Three!

Holy Cow Pie Plates and Thistles!  I am having a mid afternoon high.  I am on the latter part of day three on my juice fast and I am starting to feel good, like an overall relaxation.  This on the heels of feeling like dog shit last night.  I didn't know if I could keep on going. Juice Detoxing is not for the faint of heart. I had a really dizzy weird episode during a movie we went to last night and by the time I went to bed I felt worse. I have been waiting and waiting for the so called "burst" of energy.  By golly, I think I have gotten it!  If I can keep feeling like this, I will easily make my 7 day mark and might go on to 15 day.  I read a really interesting article about the stages your body goes through during detox. Here it is if anyone is interested. http://www.juicefasting.org/detox.htm

Since I am juicing for health reasons I may go on past 7 days to achieve full benefits.

Some reflections about myself and the process.

Juice fasting is not easy
Juice fasting takes prep work and planning
My cooking ability helps make pretty good juice
Always have an emergency snack when you go out of the house while juice fasting. (Obviously you don't want to eat it, but it will beat anything you can find out in a pinch)
I don't like raw juiced spinach that much
Kale is winner
I can sustain uncomfortable situations and make it through
I have will power, and I am using it.

Another thing I learned is to watch out when juicing Beets.  They are super powerful detoxifiers and they can make you sick.  Here is an article on Beet juicing. http://www.juicingbook.com/vegetables/beet

Here is an afternoon juice recipe for you.  This was delicious and just the pick me up I needed!

Afternoon Carrot Love

1lemon
1orange
4 carrots
2 handfuls of cilantro
1cucumber
1 apple
5 celery stalks

Juicing for Chronic Fatigue Day Three

Today is day Three, I honestly don't know how I feel yet. Yesterday was ok until I went to a movie, I started to feel weird. I had to run out, go into a bar (in workout gear) and buy an orange. I need to figure out a way to make these juices more caloric.

Here is my scale shot, almost back to pre-holiday.

A side note-- I'm doing this for health, not weight loss, but I want to document that too.

I have dark patches on my shins that popped up when I started getting sick "fatigued". I went to the derm and he gave me a steroid cream, it didn't do much. I'm hoping this will go away too.

I made the juice for today last night because E is doing this too and he had to work early. The only problem is I put a beet in it and now I'm shit scared to drink it. Yes, I'm scared of a beet. I read beets create major detox and can make you sick. Wtf? Now I don't know what to do... Dilute the whole thing? This juicing is strange business.

I'm still waiting for my energy to go up. Is this ever going to happen?

I don't want to puke beets :/

Here goes!

Juicing for Chronic Fatigue -- Day Two

So if you've been keeping up, I've started juicing for health reasons. I have had a fatigue problem for a long time, but it's gotten worse and now I can't even exercise. This is the worst for me, as I love to be active. I watched the movie Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead and was immediately motivated to start juicing.

Today is my second day of juice fasting. I'm tired and there is a zinging in my head. I woke up hungry, but I woke up without any foggy-ness. Yesterday I was dizzy, in the middle of the day-- then it was gone by the evening.

For now I will tell you this is not easy. I'm not hungry, and the thoughts of eating pizza's are few. The hard part is the effort. When you wake up hungry and it takes 30 or so minutes to make your breakfast, that's hard. It's also messy, there are a lot of parts on the machine to clean. I'm waiting for that burst of energy to kick in. Most say that happens around day three, we will see. My plan right now is to do this for 7 days. I've been to the doctor and most everything shows up fine, that's why I'm taking this approach. You should always consult a doctor if you plan on doing any plan like this. I have a physician on duty ;).

Here is my scale for today. I'm not doing this for weight, although I could shed a few pounds. I think posting weight gives and idea of what is happening. So here is today. Still haven't gotten back to my regular weight from my eating trip.

Morning juices are my favorite because I have fruits in the morning. The juice was so good today, I could have had E's serving. Actually, it's still in the fridge...

Morning Orange

6 strawberries
3 oranges
1 nectarine (take pit out!!!)
3 celery stalks
1/2 cucumber
5 carrots
1 dash cinnamon

Sooo delicious!

Happy Juicing!

Juice Fasting Day One For Chronic Fatigue, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

Since I bought my juicer yesterday I was only able to juice for the evening. That makes today my first full day of Juice fasting.

I started the day off by getting on the dreaded scale. This, if I'm going to document, had to be done. The numbers were not good -- 2.8 lbs more than normal. Guess all that vacation eating caught up. Oh well :/

Since I'm doing this all out-- here you go-- > a scale shot. Ay yay yay! I'm going to do this damn scale shot every day.

I must be crazy to do this!

Thank goodness that's over!

I started the day with a delicious fruit veg juice.

To see more post on this topic click here: http://arthash.blogspot.com/search/label/Chronic%20Fatigue

Morning Orange Sunshine

10 strawberries
2 oranges
1 lemon
1 apple
3 celery stalks
3/4 a bag of baby carrots
1 dash cinnamon

This was enough for me and E.

I have not been hungry at all, however I have dizziness that comes in waves. And not good waves like the Pink Floyd version. I read up and I think I'm detoxing. Apparently it's normal to feel cloudy, dizzy and lethargic for the first few days. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I don't like feeling dizzy.

On a side note, this morning it was easier for me to get up. It's usually hard for me to get out of bed, today was surprisingly less difficult. That in itself gives me impetus to move forward.

More updates and info tomorrow.
