Describe your Gallery space: At ART is ART consignment gallery in Dallas, the main focus is spring-boarding talented, local artists by showcasing their original, modern artwork at surprisingly comfortable prices. While absorbing, customers will also discover contemporary and vintage furniture and accessories, as well as individualistic, hand-crafted jewelry, pottery and metal sculpture. The delicious scent of Renata Holder's handmade, all-natural soy candles fills the space, and there are many different scents, all cleverly named after famous artists. We also offer complimentary, flavored, hot tea to enhance the browsing experience. Customers have described ART is ART as a "casual gallery" with a "relaxed, comfy vibe," and they appreciate our wide range of inventory that accommodates any shopper's budget.
How long has your gallery been open: ART is ART is owned by Renata and Carrie, a mother-daughter team. Renata is an artist and partner in a design firm. Carrie is a budding artist with a background in advertising. They get along well and often desired starting a creative business together. Thus, ART is ART was born. Doors opened in 2004 on Lower Greenville. It began as a contemporary furniture and accessories shop with a touch of local artwork. After eight months, the store was forced to close due to the tear-down and construction of retail/apartments, which was just as well because the location wasn’t quite right. A year later, ART is ART reopened on Oram St. at Skillman and evolved into a more eclectic atmosphere. Within a short timeframe, the wealth of local, artistic tale nt began to present itself. Jewelry designers got in on the action, and retro furniture and complements were added to the mix. Two years later, the decision was made to scout out a more visible, hip location. On September 1, 2007, ART is ART relocated to Henderson Ave. Finally … the perfect fit!
What type of work do you showcase: At ART is ART, we showcase modern and abstract works of art.
Do you work with local artists or artists from all over: We work with local, Dallas area artists.
Do you add new artists regularly and if so what is the process in which you select them: There is an abundance of talented artists in Dallas, and I wish we had the space to showcase them all. We start by viewing small, jpeg photos of their artwork via email to determine if their style fits into our motif and then adding them to our artist waiting list.
How many shows do you have each year: We typically host two shows per year, but that's always subject to change if a fun idea for an event presents itself. Events are posted on our web site.
Just for fun who is your favorite artist, living or dead, and what about their work moves you: We typically showcase 15-20 different local artists, and they continue to blow us away! We constantly keep our walls filled, and we're inspired by their artwork every day. It's impossible to pick a favorite because they're all so visually talented, but a few of our top sellers include Deanna Wilson, Roy Vance, Debbie Simms, Quincy Wakefield and ART is ART's own, Renata Holder.
What new things do you have in store for this year: Our selection of art, furniture, home accessories, pottery, jewelry and metal sculpture is continuously rotating, so there is always something new each time you visit. New merchandise is added to our web site as well. We're currently accepting modern and/or vintage furniture consignments (including cool patio furniture) in great condition, so readers can email small jpeg photos and details. Our terms are a 50-50 split when items sell and a 90-day contract term.
Do you have any up coming event that you would like to tell us about: We host the annual "Candlelight Walk on Henderson" every November that involves the majority Henderson shops staying open late and offering discounts, munchies and bevs. Crowds of people enjoy shopping up and down the street, while getting a jump on their holiday gift buying! It's a fun, festive night! You'll find details on our web site when the event is near.

§ Open to all TSA members. Sculpture must not have previously won a TSA award, and must not be currently entered in the September 2010 Collaborage show.

Display
§ Pedestals will be provided to members for a $15 fee. The artist must arrange to pick up and return the pedestal to the TSA storage location in Addison (details to be provided when the artist requests use of pedestal). The purpose of the fee is for maintenance of the current pedestal inventory and to have new ones made with funds collected by the “usage” fee. Members may provide their own pedestals. There are a limited number of pedestals, and will be rented out on a first come/first served basis. Arrangements to pick up the pedestal at the TSA storage facility in Addison must be made with one of the show chairs. Every effort will be made to accommodate your sculpture to display it most favorably.

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: Oh-- I just said that huh. Well, darn. I was in awe of a Pollock I saw, not necessarily the composition but the layers upon layers of paint, and the shear size of the canvas. HUGE!

Artist Interview: Mike Salcido
Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: I am a self taught artist. To further my skills I’ve completed my Associate of Fine Arts degree and working towards a BFA.
What is the style of your pieces: I don’t have a set “style” per se. The majority of my work is abstract. I’m interested in color and texture and bringing a feeling of a 3D element to my work. I also do photography. As I continue to evolve and grow as an artist, my “style” will also evolve and grow with me.
What is the medium in which you work: For the most part I work with Mixed Media. I incorporate different types of paint, as well as sand, paper, and plastic.
What started you on your path as an artist: I collect art and in 2003, I decided I wanted to do a painting because I was inspired by my collection of artwork. The first piece I completed was a small piece; it was a 12” x 16”. The title of it is “Alive”, aptly named because when I completed the painting that is exactly how I felt – Alive.
What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: Art is life to me, I cannot live without it. The act of creating gives me a sense of calmness and clarity that I usually do not have in this hectic world.
What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: I’m really drawn to music and performers who create a theatrical show rather than a concert. To get on stage and sing is one thing but to have a full blown “show” that takes the viewer on a journey is something that not many musicians are able to do.
Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: I have had several showings in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I’ve participated in group shows at Rising Gallery and Kettle Art Gallery. I have yet to have a one man show, however I’m currently working on a body of work and my goal is to have a show by late fall or early winter.
Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: I have a pair of old jeans with paint all over them and several T-shirts; however there are times when I get home from a long day at the office and I will go into my studio and just start painting wearing whatever it is that I wore to the office.
What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? I would have to say the most frustrating part is the stress I go through when I’m in a show. Prior to a shows opening, I get sick to my stomach to the point where I literally have cramps. Once the show starts I’m completely fine.
What is your favorite sandwich of all time: The Great American Hero Turkey and Provolone on French bread with all the fixins.
Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: This year has brought some very exciting changes to my work. I have started incorporating plastic into my work and have been able to manipulate the plastic that it gives the painting a sculptural feel. I’ve also started using spray paint in my work and really enjoy the effects it gives the paintings.
Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: Can I have more than one? Dead I would have to say Picasso, Pollock and Warhol. Alive – I love and collect the work of French Canadian Artist Dominic Besner. He is an architect turned artist and his work is amazing. I also admire Dallas Artists Jay D. Miller and Mark Whitmarsh.
What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: Wow, this is a difficult one. If I had to select only one, I would have to say it was “The Mask” by Frida Kahlo.
Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: Yes, I have 3 dogs. They love it, when I’m in the studio at least one of them is in there with me. After painting I usually find little paint paw prints throughout the house.
Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: I just participated in a group showing at Upstairs@Pearl. I’m working on a body of work and once that is complete I hope to have an exhibition. I’ll keep you posted.
