Artist Interview: Perry Burns
What is your name: Perry Burns
Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: Formal. I went to Rhode Island School of Design.
What is the style of your pieces: I call it "organic geometry," a hybrid of Islamic pattern & abstract expressionism.
What is the medium in which you work: Oil on Canvas and Prints on Paper.
What started you on your path as an artist: I've been painting since I was 5 and have always loved it.
What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: A sense of God. I am not religious, but when I paint there is clearly some other greater force that comes into play, a force that feels like it often moves through me or around me when I paint. I feel that it is that force or energy that transcends the materiality of paint, and transforms the material, movement & intention into something much greater. That is the magic of painting and, indeed all the Arts.
What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: Music, architecture, photography & "guerilla" art.
Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: Yes, often. One person & group shows. The one person shows are based on ideas I have about the bridge between painting & spirituality, art & politics, aesthetics & culture.
Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: Yes, both clothes and shoes I can get plenty of paint on.
What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? The current business of Fine Art - In the current gallery system galleries hold all the cards. There are some fairly standard practices but nothing is regulated and artists really have very little power. There is a very real reason people say, "starving artist" because it is very hard to actually make money as an artist until an artist reaches the upper echelons of the art world.
What is your favorite sandwich of all time: Interesting question(?) A "Combo" from Villa - East Hampton, NY
Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: Major changes, although it is the result of years worth of developing some new ideas and work.
Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: Currently 2 who are alive - Mark Bradford, a painter in LA, and JR, a french photographer & guerilla artist.
What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: Bernini's 'Apollo & Daphne', The Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Gehry's Disney Concert Hall in LA.
Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: 1 cat - As he mostly eats, sleeps & poops, I'm not sure he even realizes my work exists.
Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: Yes, an exhibit titled, '3 Visions' @ the Flinn Gallery - 101 West Putnam Ave. Greenwich, CT. The Opening Reception is Thurs. Feb. 3rd 6-8pm.

Artist Interview: Derrick White
What is your name: Derrick White
Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: I have a Master of Fine Arts degree (painting & drawing) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (painting & drawing) both from the University of North Texas, Denton, TX.
What is the style of your pieces: Somewhat organized chaos-ism.
What is the medium in which you work: I’ll work in anything I can get my hands on but primarily acrylic and water based mixed media.
What started you on your path as an artist: I drew cartoons and pop icons all through childhood but actually graduated high school wanting to ranch cattle. I was inspired to pursue painting and drawing in an art appreciation class taken at Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, TX and by my professor Randy Brodnax (http://www.randybrodnax.com/ ). I had a clash of art and agriculture. These days when I’m at an art opening, I feel pretty confident I’m the only person in the room who’s ever castrated a hog before.
What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: Passion. With all its trials and tribulations I still love making art, pushing paint around and getting lost in the zone. I can’t imagine not creating.
What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: I love good and interesting movies and I teach a Film Studies Art Appreciation class at Tyler Junior College.
Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: Having a solo show is like standing in a room full of people in your underwear and having to make up fake answers to things you thought were observable and self-evident…but with refreshments.
Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: I have drips of paint on every single article of clothing I own, much to the exasperation of my wife Alicia.
What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? Keeping the flying monkeys out of my paint.
What is your favorite sandwich of all time: I don’t know if it counts as a sandwich but a Double-Double from the In-N-Out Burger is my fondest memory from a trip to Los Angeles, CA.
Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: No major changes taking place but I am real excited about the latest pieces I’ve made. My favorite painting is always the one I just finished.
Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: Living - Dallas artist David Bates (I love his paintings yet hate his sculptures, which gives me hope). Artist friend and colleague Paul Jones (Tyler). Paul and I have been sharing and stealing each other’s ideas for years (that flying monkeys line is his). Dead - Louise Nevelson (her sculptures of random and discarded objects have an unexplainable power).
What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: I wasn’t expecting it but James Turrell’s sky space, Tending, (Blue) at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas knocked my socks right off and it’s just an enclosed white room with a hole in the roof. http://www.nashersculpturecenter.org/James/Turrell/Introduction.aspx
Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: We have a little Shih Tzu and she couldn’t care less about my work. Gus, our shepherd /sheltie who passed away 12 months ago after 12 years, his conversations and opinions I really miss.
Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: I am participating in 15 Minutes of Fame: Pop Culture. Overview:
Hecho en Dallas is an annual juried exhibition designed to showcase the recent work of professional artists who reside and are active in the artistic environment of the Dallas area. The exhibition was conceived by the Latino Cultural Center in recognition of the talented pool of artists whose creative endeavors give vitality to the cultural movement in DFW.
Exhibition Timeline:
Submission deadline: Tuesday, February 8, 2011 by 5 p.m.
Not a postmark deadline. Entries received after the deadline will be disqualified.
Notifications to artists: Wednesday, February 16, 2011 – via e-mail
Delivery of artwork: Wednesday, March 2, 2011 (4-7 PM)
Opening reception: Thursday, March 10, 2011 (6-8 PM)
Exhibition dates: March 10 – April 29, 2011
Pick-up artwork: Saturday, April 30, 2011 (1-4 PM)
Eligibility:
• Artists must reside in the City of Dallas or within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex
• Art must have been created within the last 3 years to be eligible
• Artworks must not have been exhibited in the region within the last 18 months
• Artworks submitted must be in the possession of the artist and ready for display
• Any medium will be considered; however, artists who exhibit artwork that requires the use of special equipment (computers, projectors, multimedia devices, etc.) will be responsible for provided such equipment for the duration of the exhibition
• Size limit for 3D artwork will not exceed 15 feet (length + width + depth), with the longest side of the piece not exceeding 7 feet.
• For 2D artwork, the longest side cannot exceed 7 feet.
• There is no entry fee for this juried exhibition
Jurors:
Juror names will be announced on the week of Jan. 17.
How to Submit Entries:
• Do not submit original works of art for consideration. Only digital photographs of artwork will be reviewed
• Submit UP TO THREE digital images (JPEG files) on a CD
• Each image should represent an individual work of art. Artists may submit up to two images to represent different views of three-dimensional artwork
• All disks must be labeled with the artist’s name, phone number, and email address
• Submissions will not be accepted via e-mail
• Files should be named using the last name of the artist and sequential numbers for every photograph submitted. Example: smith1.jpg, smith1detail.jpg (if applicable), smith2.jpg, etc.
Additional Requirements:

Artist Opportunity – Call to Artists – Kathryn Heard-Craig Juried Art Exhibition, McKinney
The Art Club of McKinney issues a Call to Artists for their upcoming show. The Kathryn Heard-Craig Juried Art Exhibition will accept entries through February 7th, and will open from March 11th - March 13th. Location: Heard-Craig Hall, 306 North Church Street, McKinney, Texas 75069
MISSION The mission of the Kathryn Heard-Craig Juried Exhibition and Sale is to encourage both established and emerging artists who live in Collin County, or are associated with visual arts organizations in Collin County, to exhibit their art, compete for prize money, and sell their art.

JURORS/JUDGES Jurors who play a significant role in the artistic community of Collin County will critique all work and select the finalists. Tricia Taylor Dixon, curator of the Cowgirl Museum in Fort Worth, will judge the 2D Traditional category. Mary Vernon, currently Associate Professor of Art, Meadows School of the Arts, SMU, will judge the 2D Contemporary category. Ms. Vernon is represented by Valley House Gallery, Dallas. CATEGORIES Each artist may submit a maximum of three works for consideration. The artist must indicate in which category each piece is to be entered. If the jurors consider another category more appropriate for the work, the artist will be consulted before a change of category is made. All works must be the original work of the artist. Photographs, computer-generated, digital, or giclee prints will not be accepted for consideration at this time. 2D works are limited to oil, acrylic, water media, egg tempera, encaustic and pastel works. Prints created through traditional processes, such as engravings and block prints, are accepted provided the edition is limited and controlled by the artist. 2D works include two categories: Traditional - Apparent emphasis must be on traditional/academic technique, style and/or subject matter. Contemporary - Apparent emphasis must be on the appropriate use of a variety of media in a uniquely personal style and/or subject matter. 3D works are considered one category and include sculpture, ceramics, and any free-standing or hanging piece of three dimensional work. AWARDS The total awards will be approximately $2000 in cash and prizes,with a $500 First Place Award in each category.
COMMISSION 5% of all sale prices will be collected as a donation to the Heard- Craig Center for the Arts, McKinney, Texas. The Heard-Craig Center is dedicated to the preservation and study of Texas art, and has a growing collection of Early Texas Art. The remaining sale price will be mailed to the artist within 30 days of close of exhibition.
ELIGIBILITY The artist:
GUIDELINES The artist can submit up to three works for consideration. 2D works: The longest dimension shall not exceed 50” and shortest dimension shall not exceed 40”, including frame. 3D works: Three views must be submitted for each piece and the combined dimensions (height, length and width, all added together) shall not exceed 70” inches. The artist retains copyright of their work. Once accepted into the competition, images of the work become part of the Art Club of McKinney archives and may be used in publicity for this and future shows. The artist's name and copyright will be included in all publicity.
FEES Non-refundable entry fees are: $20 for students (high school, college and graduate school) $25 for members of the Art Club of McKinney $35 for all others
SUBMISSION All artists must download and fully complete the application form and email it to juried@theartclubofmckinney.com. (Application soon will be available on the website.) The entry fee must be submitted through the PayPal page on this website using either a credit card, debit card, or a PayPal account. A digital image of each work must be emailed to juried@theartclubofmckinney.com. The image name must be lower case and in the format artist-first-name-artist-last-name, name-of-work.jpg. The name of the work on the application form, the jpg, and the actual work of art MUST be the same. Example: anne-royer-guitar-horses.jpg The image must be 300dpi, minimum file size = 1 megabyte, maximum file size 2 megabytes. Slides or images on CD/DVD will not be accepted. All submissions must be received by midnight 02/07/11. Artists will be notified by email that their work has been accepted or not accepted by 02/14/11.
ACCEPTED WORKS All art work must be hand-delivered to the exhibition site on 03/08/11 between the hours of 9am and noon, and 03/09/11 between the hours of 4:30pm and 8pm. All 2D work must be either framed, gallery wrapped (min. 1” thick), or on min. 1” thick support with finished edge. All 3D work must be ready to display with any stands and title plates securely fastened. The art work may be priced for sale. The sale price must include the Texas state sales tax and the artist is responsible for reporting the sales tax to the State of Texas. The art work may be pre-sold but must hang in gallery for the duration of show. Art work cannot be removed from the exhibition space before the close of the exhibition.
