"What Texas Means to Me"
CLOSING DATE: 2010-06-01 00:00:00 — Web: http://austinartspace.com/ /
Austin Art Space Gallery and Studios officially opened submissions for the 2nd Annual ‘What Texas Means to Me” Juried Awards Show. The show is one of three juried shows held each year at the gallery that have drawn entries from all over the U.S. and as far away as Europe and New Zealand. The exhibit focuses on anything and everything Texas. For more than a century, Texas has evoked big dreams and strong emotions. The Texas spirit encompasses early settlers and prospectors to oil barons, farmers and cattle ranchers and now high tech and politics. Texas influences include Mexican, Spanish, and French rule, Native Americans, German immigrants and an overarching sense of independence. It seems that no matter what part of the world people are from, Texas inspires. The show’s theme is built entirely upon artists’ inspirations and impressions of any aspect of Texas’ past, present or future. First, second and third place awards will be selected from among the finalists on display. The competition is not limited to Texas artists. It is open for two-dimensional and three-dimensional artists anywhere in the world and is expected to elicit a variety of styles from abstract and contemporary to representational and traditional. The juror for the inaugural show will be Phillip Wade. A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, with a MFA in Painting from the University of Texas, he is a full-time artist that has exhibited in many galleries. His work resides in innumerable collections around the country including the Driskill Hotel, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bentsen, and actress Diane Ladd. A recent one hundred foot mural project was commissioned for the ranch of Mr. and Mrs. Mort Topfer. He currently mentors and teaches at the Austin Museum of Art. The inaugural exhibit last year proved highly popular with patrons and artists alike. Valerie Walden, manager of the artists’ collective and gallery explained, “The show drew a vast range of interpretations and artistic styles. It was quite an exposition on Texas, literally and figuratively. At least 300 people attended the opening, and the commentary convinced us to make this a regular part of our calendar.” Artists must submit entries no later than Tuesday, June 1, 2010 and will be notified after 10 days. All details and the entry form are available at http://austinartspace.com/WhatTexasMeansToMeCallForArtists2010.aspx All participating artists will be invited to attend the artists’ reception on Saturday, July 10, 2010, 6:00pm-9:00pm which will be open to all patrons. The exhibit continues during regular gallery hours, ending on Saturday, August 28.
