State Artist 2011-2012 The Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) is seeking nominations

The Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) is seeking nominations for the positions of 2011 and 2012 State Poet Laureate, State Musician, State Two-dimensional Artist and State Three-dimensional Artist. All Texas citizens are encouraged to make a nomination, and self-nominations are encouraged. Deadline for Texas State Artist nominations is November 1, 2010.

Qualifications
All qualified nominees must be native Texans or five-year residents of the state. Candidates must have received recognition for high levels of excellence and success in their respective disciplines. They also must have received critical reviews in state, regional or national publications.
Texas State Artists are widely recognized for their contributions to the state and the advancement of their respective art forms. They are established artists with a statewide, national or international reputation. They reflect Texas’ diversity and high-quality artistic offerings.

Nominations
State artist nominations are made using an online form. In addition to providing biographical information, a resume, bibliography of critical reviews and a list of awards, the nomination process requires the submission of work samples for review by a TCA evaluation panel. Multiple submissions, email messages or telephone nominations will not be considered in the selection process.

Process
TCA oversees the selection process for the four positions, created by S.B. 1043 of the 77th Legislature. A TCA evaluation panel will review all nominations, including work samples, and submit a list of 10 names per artist category to the Texas Poet Laureate, State Musician and State Artist Committee in December. The Committee, composed of members appointed by the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the House of Representatives, will make the final selections sometime between January and May 2011 when the 82nd Legislature convenes.

Benefits
Texas State Artists serve one-year terms and represent the state’s artistic legacy. State Artists receive statewide recognition, and the designation provides a unique marketing opportunity. State artists also have the opportunity to be included on TCA’s Texas Touring Roster.

First Night Austin is a major festival of the arts to be experienced by the whole community in welcoming the New Year. It is unique among Austin’s urban festivals in that it celebrates the downtown cityscape by programming performing and visual arts IN and ON the fabric of the city – building lobbies, storefront windows, church sanctuaries, hotel ballrooms, plazas and parks, street corners, balconies, courtyards, theaters, museums, and more.

With this unique “stage” for the arts, First Night Austin provides an exceptional opportunity for artists, both established and emerging, to expand and explore their creativity, to engage members of the community in their work, and to partner with artists across the disciplines. First Night Austin encourages partnerships between artists, arts organizations and community members in the creative process of developing a proposal for New Year’s Eve.

Artists can be adventurous, try new forms and further their own creative process for audience members who come with fresh expectations, eager to experience something out of the ordinary.

First Night Austin will accept proposals for visual/environmental/interdisciplinary and performance art, music, movement, theater, dance, puppetry, storytelling and the literary arts, film, video, theater, wearable art, participatory craft making, spoken word, comedy, cultural arts, technology art, as well as for participation in the Grand Procession.

First Night Austin includes an afternoon Family Festival, a Grand Procession & Finale, Evening Programming, and a Midnight Spectacular.

First Night Austin is committed to reflect, and be sensitive to, the ethnic, racial, social, cultural, artistic and intellectual diversity of the greater Austin community.

Stay tuned for festival related updates and events as the festival grows near.

The scope of this project is to provide 66,000 square feet of renovated space to accommodate visitors and staff of both the municipal court and police substation. Artist Opportunity – CityArtCal

We are almost halfway through 2011 and this is what I know:

* Creative expression is being censored more and more.

* The arts are minimized in schools, while science, math, sports are front and center.

* Funding for the arts is being slashed- NEA's use of art as political propaganda distorts creative truth!

As creative thinkers we question, push the envelope and tend to be more in touch with our intuitive natures. We have a job...our larger purpose as artists is to visually record and interpret the world around us... to feel, express and create.

We CAN Make A Difference! As artists we need to be visible... our art seen... over and over again. Proactively educating and reminding people that the history of art is the history of mankind. Proudly... I have been called, "a rebel with a canvas"....something we all can be proud to be!!!

As artists we already have the medium for change...

More than half the 2011 book is filled... send in your release today! It works...

Art is not seeing different landscapes,

but seeing landscapes with different eyes.

Public Art: The Graue Award

CLOSING DATE: 2010-05-26 00:00:00 — Web: http://soex.org/ / Phone:
Southern Exposure is proud to announce a new opportunity for local, national and international artists to develop and present a new public art project in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2011 and 2012. With the support of The Graue Family Foundation, Southern Exposure is offering an annual $15,000 award to commission a public art project in the Bay Area. Through an open call for entries in 2010, and again in 2011, SoEx will select one project each year to commission and present to the public the following year. The Graue Award is an initiative of SoEx Off-Site, a program of Southern Exposure's founded in 2006 that seeks to commission and present new public work by emerging artists that intervenes and interacts in the social and political spheres beyond the space of gallery. "What Texas Means to Me"

CLOSING DATE: 2010-06-01 00:00:00 — Web: http://austinartspace.com/ /

Austin Art Space Gallery and Studios officially opened submissions for the 2nd Annual ‘What Texas Means to Me” Juried Awards Show. The show is one of three juried shows held each year at the gallery that have drawn entries from all over the U.S. and as far away as Europe and New Zealand. The exhibit focuses on anything and everything Texas. For more than a century, Texas has evoked big dreams and strong emotions. The Texas spirit encompasses early settlers and prospectors to oil barons, farmers and cattle ranchers and now high tech and politics. Texas influences include Mexican, Spanish, and French rule, Native Americans, German immigrants and an overarching sense of independence. It seems that no matter what part of the world people are from, Texas inspires. The show’s theme is built entirely upon artists’ inspirations and impressions of any aspect of Texas’ past, present or future. First, second and third place awards will be selected from among the finalists on display. The competition is not limited to Texas artists. It is open for two-dimensional and three-dimensional artists anywhere in the world and is expected to elicit a variety of styles from abstract and contemporary to representational and traditional. The juror for the inaugural show will be Phillip Wade. A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, with a MFA in Painting from the University of Texas, he is a full-time artist that has exhibited in many galleries. His work resides in innumerable collections around the country including the Driskill Hotel, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bentsen, and actress Diane Ladd. A recent one hundred foot mural project was commissioned for the ranch of Mr. and Mrs. Mort Topfer. He currently mentors and teaches at the Austin Museum of Art. The inaugural exhibit last year proved highly popular with patrons and artists alike. Valerie Walden, manager of the artists’ collective and gallery explained, “The show drew a vast range of interpretations and artistic styles. It was quite an exposition on Texas, literally and figuratively. At least 300 people attended the opening, and the commentary convinced us to make this a regular part of our calendar.” Artists must submit entries no later than Tuesday, June 1, 2010 and will be notified after 10 days. All details and the entry form are available at http://austinartspace.com/WhatTexasMeansToMeCallForArtists2010.aspx All participating artists will be invited to attend the artists’ reception on Saturday, July 10, 2010, 6:00pm-9:00pm which will be open to all patrons. The exhibit continues during regular gallery hours, ending on Saturday, August 28.
