On July 10th, 2010 , during the Second Saturday Gallery Walk in the Wynwood District of Miami, Jonathan Charles Vaughan will be exhibiting a number of his works from The Ornamental Self series at GAB Studio. This exhibition includes 7 drawings and 1 painting, which explore the role that hair plays as a signifier of gender identity. Vaughan ’s work questions our contemporary cultural constructs of gender and presents viewers with imagery that is less identifiable than the regulated structures prescribed by current social norms. The Ornamental Self series began as color pencil drawings of snapshots taken of the back of his hair from 2007 onwards that documented the changes occurring as his hair fluctuated between different styles and colors. The series now includes paintings and drawings of his hair in a variety of styles that draw attention to the lack of ornamentation in contemporary men’s fashion.
The show runs until the 7th of August.
