Opening Reception: SATURDAY. 07.17.10 (6-9PM)Exhibition runs through Saturday, September 4th. 2919-C Commerce St. Dallas, TX 75226 214.760.7170 About Jeremy Smith Jeremy Smith is a self-made cartoonist and creator of Ropeburn which was first published in 2005. In 2007 his efforts for this project were recognized by the Xeric Foundation which awarded him the funds to publish the first collection of Ropeburn comics, which are moments culled from the artist's experience within the service industry and feature a recurring cast of characters who often illuminate the meaning found in daily interactions, with humor, self-deprecation and a sardonic wit. In 2010 Smith was recognized by the Dallas Museum of Art and was awarded the Dozier Travel Grant. With this grant he will travel to the east coast to begin a collaboration with acclaimed artist Al Columbia. This exhibition will feature 5 new paintings as well as selected original drawings of published Ropeburn strips. above image: Eat Him, Him and Him :: mixed media on board :: 8.75x11.25 in :: 2010 A+C Q+A with Jeremy SmithLook for a Q+A with Jeremy in the July/August issue of Arts and Culture which will be on the stands July 13th. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// About Billy Zinser's work is defined by a cartoonish approach to non-objective abstract painting intended to address color, line, and shape as the subject matter of the work, through simple gestures and automatic mark making. With a deliberate application of brushstrokes and severe layering of paint, simple forms are implied, originally serving as the vehicles for the brushstrokes and marks, they take on a life of their own, sharing an affinity with Philip Guston's bold illustrative marks and pilings of simple figures, they become creatures of conspicuous presence -transformed from paint into humorous and ambiguous animated figures whose simple forms have more in common with Ernesto Neto's 'Ovaloid' sculptures than Franz Kline's analysis of the brushstroke. In addition to his paintings the artist creates small scale, hand painted, plastic resin sculptures which are known as Macrodons. In 2010 Zinser was recognized by the Dallas Museum of Art and received an award from the Kimbrough Fund. With this grant he will create a large scale inflatable of a Macrodon as a public work. About The Public TrustThe Public Trust was established in 2004 by owner/director Brian Gibb. The gallery's program includes painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and new media works by exciting contemporary artists. In addition to the exhibition program, the gallery collaborates with artists to release print editions, monographs and other artist multiples. The Public Trust is a member of CADD (Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas) Gibb is also the co-founder of Art Prostitute, the internationally acclaimed publication which produced 8 issues from 2003-2007. A redux of this project will launch in 2010.
