THE GOSS-MICHAEL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES ANNUAL STUDENT ART CONTEST WINNERS

Mansfield's Legacy High School Students Win Five Awards

DALLAS (June 1, 2011) – As part of its effort to support and encourage the artistic experience of students in Dallas/Fort Worth and the surrounding area, The Goss-Michael Foundation has announced the winners of the fifth annual Goss-Michael Foundation Student Art Contest, “Saturate”.

Public and private high school students from the greater Dallas, Fort Worth and surrounding areas participated in this year’s competition which required students to explore and experiment with the chroma of color through photography, drawing, painting and mixed media.  Contestants were free to choose their own subject matter but were required to create a work of art that illustrated the progression of color from high to low saturation.

Peter Doroshenko, Director of the Dallas Contemporary, was the guest judge for the contest and selected five winners in the categories of photography, painting, mixed media, drawing and best in show.  At an award reception, Joyce Goss, Executive Director, The Goss-Michael Foundation, awarded a $400 U.S. Savings Bond to four students: Ms. Madison Ward, Photography; Ms. Elena Chudoba, Painting; Ms. Zelda Valverde, Mixed Media; and Ms. Andi Redman, Drawing.   

Best in Show was awarded to Ms. Kathe Fishburn who received a $650 U.S. Savings Bond.  Kathe is currently a senior at Mansfield Legacy High School where she is enrolled in advanced art photography, a member of Art Club, Treasurer of Anime Club and Vice President of the League of Acceptance, a club devoted to promoting tolerance and acceptance of all people.  In past years she has taken part in ballet and theater, both onstage and off, even participating in UIL Theatrical Design for costume.  Next year she plans on attending Stephen F. Austin State University where she will pursue her love of art.

While all five students have creative talent in common, they are also students of art teacher David Mason at Mansfield's Legacy High School.  In addition to the U.S. Savings Bonds, the winners are featured in the Foundation’s monthly newsletter and on the website, www.gossmichaelfoundation.org.

    The Goss-Michael Foundation was founded by George Michael and Kenny Goss in June 2007. The Foundation offers the public a rotating schedule of exhibitions derived from Goss and Michael’s private collection of British contemporary art as well as other institutions. These exhibitions serve as a challenge to preconceived art notions and strive to set a new standard in artistic awareness by providing visitors with fresh and fascinating art experiences. Through these experiences, the Foundation hopes to generate new perspectives and conversations on the creative methods of contemporary artists. Locally, the Foundation is dedicated to contributing to Dallas’ thriving artistic community and enhancing the public’s familiarity and interaction with contemporary and emerging British artists. The Foundation fosters young artists in Dallas, and throughout Texas through numerous scholarships and art education programs.
