The Chinati Foundation's Artist in Residence program was instituted in 1989 with the aim of supporting the development of artists of diverse ages, backgrounds, and disciplines. To date, the Chinati Foundation has hosted more than 75 artists from more than fifteen countries in its residency program.
The Artist in Residence program provides an opportunity for artists from around the world to work in a striking, natural environment. Exhibitions are often held at the conclusion of the residency. These become an important part of the museum's temporary exhibition program, and provide a vital counterpoint to the permanent collection.
The Chinati Foundation provides a furnished apartment on the museum's grounds and a studio in Marfa. Resident artists have unlimited access to Chinati's collection and archive, and the museum staff and interns are available to assist in securing materials and preparing exhibitions. A stipend of $1,000 is provided to assist with travel and art materials.
The Chinati Foundation maintains a casual environment, and it is up to the artists to develop their own work schedule. Marfa is a small town in a sparsely populated area of far West Texas, and artists may spend a great deal of time alone. A residency at Chinati is ideal for those artists who seek a quiet and sympathetic environment with few distractions. The average residency lasts two to three months; this can be adjusted according to individual needs and the resources of the museum.

Creative Residency at PlatteForum PlatteForum Artist Residency Denver Colorado
2011-2012 CREATIVE RESIDENCIES AT PLATTEFORUM
Application deadline May 20, 2011
PlatteForum creates opportunities for artists to expand their work and collaborate with other artists, genres and venues. Our residency season is Sept. 2011–Aug. 2012. Three Creative Residency options are available, each with unique opportunities for the artist. Select which type of residency you prefer. You may select any or all of the different type of residencies.
1. Creative Residency: building on a body of work
The Creative Resident spends the majority of the residency developing a body of work they propose. The Creative Resident devotes a minimum of 20 hours per week at the PlatteForum studio working on their proposed body of work; and 4-6 hours, in addition to planning time, per week with one group of youth. The youth workshops are supported by PlatteForum staff. The resulting works from the artist and youth are presented to the public.
2. Residency Mash-Up: spontaneous combustion
Two artists are selected to be in residence at the same time. PlatteForum will provide a “prompt” or “starting point” to trigger the work. The artists may create work together; in opposition to; and any configuration in-between. The Creative Residents devote a minimum of 20 hours per week at the PlatteForum studio working on their body(ies) of work; and each artist devotes 4-6 hours, in addition to planning time, per week in workshops with youth. The youth workshops are supported by PlatteForum staff. The resulting works from the artists and youth are presented to the public. Do not submit applications as a collaborative team, as PlatteForum will curate the artists for the Residency Mash-Up.
3. Confluence Project: youth and community engagement with PlatteForum + Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver)
The PlatteForum + MCA Denver (www.MCADenver.org) Creative Residency is a shared artist-in-residency program. PlatteForum is the working studio with completed work installed at MCA Denver Fox Family Idea Box. The applying artist should be interested in creating art that is collaborative in making and in the way the audience views and interacts with the installed art. This becomes a dynamic environment for social interaction and hands-on activities, evolving as visitors participate. The Creative Resident devotes a minimum of 20 hours per week at the PlatteForum studio working on their body of work; and devotes 4-6 hours, in addition to planning time, per week in workshops with 24+ teens from PlatteForum’s and MCA Denver’s youth programs.
APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Who Can Apply
The Creative Residency programs are open to artists in all genres. Applications from established professional artists and emerging artists, as well as graduate students are welcome. We encourage local, national and international artists to apply. Artists can apply as individuals or in collaborative teams (please do not apply as a collaborative team for the Residency Mash-Up). Artistic excellence, merit, and creative ways to interact with the public as articulated in the application are important criteria in the selection process. Applicants must be able to speak and understand English. There is a three-year wait period for former residents to apply (For example, a Creative Resident from the 2009-10 season is not eligible until the 2012-13 season).
Selection Process
An interdisciplinary selection committee will consider applications for the residencies. Care will be given to select artists representing a variety of genres and experiences.

the fields project Bringing Art and Agriculture Together Oregon
The Fields Project is located in Oregon, IL, nestled in the scenic Rock River Hill Country. It is located amid state forests and parks, historical sites, sandstone outcroppings, prairie vegetation and wild life. This biodiversity has provided endless subject matter for artistic expression. Lorado Taft established The Eagles Nest Art Colony here in 1898. It continued through 1942 bringing in artists from the Art Institute and University of Chicago.
Our objectives are to focus public attention on art, agriculture, and our natural resources while creating new relationships between artists, farmers, environmentalists, and educators.
For painters, photographers, and sculptors, we have a nine-day program that includes lodging on a working farm. During this time, the artists can apply their art or choose to do a Field Sculpture. A Field Sculpture is an opportunity to “paint with the land” by cutting/mowing flora on a piece of land that can be up to 5 acres in size. These Field Sculptures are designed to be viewed and photographed from the air.
On the last Sunday of the event, we have a Fine Arts & Crafts Festival where visiting artists display and sell their work, along with regional artists and sculptors. The festival is held at Mix Park, located on Rt. 2, south of Rt. 64 in Oregon, IL.
There is a sculptor’s competition each year and the winning maquette is reproduced as a life-size bronze sculpture. Our goal is to place ten outdoor sculptures in the Oregon area in ten years. The first sculpture was installed in 2005. When the project is completed, there will be 16 public sculptures on the Oregon Sculpture Trail.

The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) provides financial support for creative professionals through its Cultural Exchange International (CEI) fellowship program. Grants of between $5000 and $20,000 are available for residency projects between 2 weeks and 3 months in duration. LA based institutions can apply to host international artists (1-3 persons); or LA-based artists (or groups of 2-3 persons) can travel abroad to perform a residency project and return to Los Angeles and provide a public presentation about their accomplishments.
Short description of program
CEI will provide fellowship support to creative professionals (artists, arts administrators, arts/cultural educators and scholars, curators, presenters, creative entrepreneurs, cultural innovators, and cultural experts) traveling abroad for intensive residencies (two weeks to three months), or creative professionals coming to Los Angeles for intensive residencies (two weeks to three months), who have planned collaborative relationships with Los Angeles organizations to host their residencies. The program has been designed to support individual professionals or small groups (limit three to four people). While CEI is not intended to support large touring groups or stand alone exhibitions, a proposal for a CEI residency may supplement a larger project, an extended tour, or a stand alone exhibition. If so, it is imperative that you clearly articulate the CEI residency based portion of the larger project with a smaller group of creative professionals both in the narrative and in the budget, as well as provide information about the larger project that you are undertaking.
CEI grants are intended to support residency-based projects between two weeks and three months that focus on:
• structured time for Los Angeles-based creative professional(s), paired with a host organization(s) abroad, to conduct
process or product oriented residencies and that may include cultural research
• structured time for international creative professional(s), paired with an LA-based host organization, to conduct process
or product oriented residencies and that may include cultural research
For brief descriptions of prior CEI Fellows, use the following link: http://www.culturela.org/grants/CEI_Winners.pdf The grants listed in this document provide a basic idea of the types of projects that have received funding support to date.
CEI is not a source of support for:
• touring only or exhibition only projects that are not substantively linked to residency activities in the host community,
• sabbaticals or study trips,
• travel for youth or youth projects,
• student projects being done for any degree program,
• residencies that focus on benefiting closed groups (e.g. tuitioned-students at one or more specific schools)
CEI projects must have a public component and/or involve artists from the host community. Public components may be lectures, exhibitions, performances, or workshops that are open to the general public. As such, application narratives must describe how a proposed project will accomplish this goal. Additionally, CEI can support internet-based projects that are created and launched as part of person-to-person exchanges.
LA-based creative professionals who plan to conduct residencies abroad are eligible to apply, and if chosen to receive a grant, will be representing the City of Los Angeles as a recipient of CEI funds. To benefit the City and its residents, creative professionals chosen to perform residencies abroad must return from their exchange and provide at least one public educational or creative presentation about their experience and project. These culmination activities should be free or low cost to the public and, whenever feasible, be provided at a City venue or project-appropriate, publicly-accessible site within the City of Los Angeles. Proposals should describe what public activity(ies) applicants are planning to conduct upon return from abroad.
CEI will also support international creative professionals wishing to undertake similar activities in LA by supporting their residency projects. In these cases the LA host organization must be the applicant to CEI. International artists are asked to do independent research and use professional networks to meet and develop project ideas with LA host institutions. The staff of the City of LA Department of Cultural Affairs cannot recommend or match artists/groups with host institutions.

Montalvo’s artist residency program, the third oldest in the US and the oldest on the West Coast, was established in 1939 as a result Senator James Duval Phelan's bequest of his estate (an Italian-style villa and 175 acres) for the development of art, music, literature and architecture. The program closed down in 1998 for six years during which time new facilities were built and a new program structured.
Short description of programme
The Sally and Don Lucas Artists Programs opened in the fall of 2004 within the larger Montalvo Arts Center. Built on the site of an old orchard, the complex was designed by six teams of artist and architect who together created ten discipline-specific live-and-work studios and one Commons building. The Lucas Artists Programs foster temporary communities of highly motivated, talented, committed, creative and critical minds from a range of disciplines and from different parts of the globe. Artists and thinkers are invited to work and reside in the Programs’ residency complex for a period of three months, during which time they work on a project, develop ideas, engage in creative thought and discussion with each other and in critical reflection on the world around us, develop collaborations, and otherwise advance their art and scholarship in myriad ways. Collaboration and network development form key emphases of the Programs, whether in the form of fellows working with each other, with Silicon Valley industry, with Montalvo’s other departments, or through ties with Bay Area, national, and international arts, cultural, and academic institutions. The Lucas Artists Programs additionally sponsors conferences, colloquia, and other gatherings and special events, locally, nationally, and internationally.

Selection procedure
The Lucas Artists Programs uses a recommendation/invitational approach to identify candidates for our residency program. Each year, we seek out the advice of a rotating group of respected visual artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, and other arts professionals from around the world, asking them to identify extraordinary yet under-recognized artists in their communities. The process we have put into place ensures the participation in our program of an international group of highly qualified artists who might not normally find their way to residency programs even though they have the potential to become major voices in the next generation of artists and thinkers.
Presentation of artists' work
Depending on the project, opportunities exist for exhibitions and presentations at Montalvo as well as in Bay Area, national, and international venues.
Number of studios
10 live/work studios and one Commons building.

Special workshops
In addition to the core residency program, Lucas Artists Programs sponsors conferences, colloquia, exhibits, performances, and other special events and gatherings locally, nationally, and internationally.

Emergency Relief for Artists Affected by Disaster
Emergency Relief Residences
In its unconditional support for all artists, SFAIs Emergency Relief Residency program provides respite to artists affected by the horrors of political, social, or natural disasters. SFAI began the Emergency Relief Residency in 2001 for New York artists following the devastating events of 9/11. The hurricanes and flooding in the Gulf Coast region underscored our feeling of responsibility toward our US peers and colleagues. In comprehending the loss of lives and the ways in which the work of a lifetime can be wiped out in an instant, SFAI reinstituted our Emergency Relief Residency Program to provide living space and studios to professional artists, writers, and crafts people of the Gulf Coast states, whose lives and livelihoods have been so deeply affected.
The flexibility of the Institute to respond quickly and effectively to such challenges is one of our great strengths. We continue to open our doors to artists whose lives and creative work have been disrupted by natural disasters or personal ones. SFAI has received support for this initiative through generous contributions from the Warhol Foundation, the Pollock Krasner Foundation and the Joan Mitchell Foundation.
The SFAI also partners with freeDimensional, an international non-profit organization dedicated to finding safe-haven locations in residency programs around the world for artist/activists who find them selves in peril as a result of the work that they make.
