2011-2012 CREATIVE RESIDENCIES AT PLATTEFORUM
Application deadline May 20, 2011
PlatteForum creates opportunities for artists to expand their work and collaborate with other artists, genres and venues. Our residency season is Sept. 2011–Aug. 2012. Three Creative Residency options are available, each with unique opportunities for the artist. Select which type of residency you prefer. You may select any or all of the different type of residencies.
1. Creative Residency: building on a body of work
The Creative Resident spends the majority of the residency developing a body of work they propose. The Creative Resident devotes a minimum of 20 hours per week at the PlatteForum studio working on their proposed body of work; and 4-6 hours, in addition to planning time, per week with one group of youth. The youth workshops are supported by PlatteForum staff. The resulting works from the artist and youth are presented to the public.
2. Residency Mash-Up: spontaneous combustion
Two artists are selected to be in residence at the same time. PlatteForum will provide a “prompt” or “starting point” to trigger the work. The artists may create work together; in opposition to; and any configuration in-between. The Creative Residents devote a minimum of 20 hours per week at the PlatteForum studio working on their body(ies) of work; and each artist devotes 4-6 hours, in addition to planning time, per week in workshops with youth. The youth workshops are supported by PlatteForum staff. The resulting works from the artists and youth are presented to the public. Do not submit applications as a collaborative team, as PlatteForum will curate the artists for the Residency Mash-Up.
3. Confluence Project: youth and community engagement with PlatteForum + Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver)
The PlatteForum + MCA Denver (www.MCADenver.org) Creative Residency is a shared artist-in-residency program. PlatteForum is the working studio with completed work installed at MCA Denver Fox Family Idea Box. The applying artist should be interested in creating art that is collaborative in making and in the way the audience views and interacts with the installed art. This becomes a dynamic environment for social interaction and hands-on activities, evolving as visitors participate. The Creative Resident devotes a minimum of 20 hours per week at the PlatteForum studio working on their body of work; and devotes 4-6 hours, in addition to planning time, per week in workshops with 24+ teens from PlatteForum’s and MCA Denver’s youth programs.
APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Who Can Apply
The Creative Residency programs are open to artists in all genres. Applications from established professional artists and emerging artists, as well as graduate students are welcome. We encourage local, national and international artists to apply. Artists can apply as individuals or in collaborative teams (please do not apply as a collaborative team for the Residency Mash-Up). Artistic excellence, merit, and creative ways to interact with the public as articulated in the application are important criteria in the selection process. Applicants must be able to speak and understand English. There is a three-year wait period for former residents to apply (For example, a Creative Resident from the 2009-10 season is not eligible until the 2012-13 season).
Selection Process
An interdisciplinary selection committee will consider applications for the residencies. Care will be given to select artists representing a variety of genres and experiences.
