The City of Austin Art in Public Places (AIPP) program of the Cultural Arts Division seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create art to be integrated into the Municipal Court/Police Substation Project. AIPP requests that interested professional visual artists residing in the United States submit a Statement of Intent with Qualifications. Application deadline will be May 2, 2008. The artwork budget is $210,000.
This facility will constitute an adaptive reuse of a former big box retail store, and will house the municipal court and also provide space for a police substation. The footprint of the facility is 108,000 square feet, and is sited on a high elevation near the interstate highway (IH-35) in north central Austin. The scope of this project is to provide 66,000 square feet of renovated space to accommodate visitors and staff of both the municipal court and police substation. The facility will be located within the St. Johns neighborhood of Austin, at IH-35 and St. Johns. The project is a “design-build,” with the design manual expected to be finished to go out for bid by late spring 2008.
The artwork opportunities for this facility are open, and the artist will be an integral part of the design team working on this project. Multi-media, digital media and other innovative approaches are encouraged.
All applicants must submit their statement of intent and qualifications through the Application System for Austin Public Art (ASAP!) online system. The system may be accessed by visiting the Art in Public Places homepage, at www.cityofaustin.org/aipp, and clicking on the ASAP! logo. The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 2, 2008, at midnight.
