24th Annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibition The Bath House Cultural Center

The Bath House Cultural Center presents

24th Annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibition
October 16-November 13, 2010
Opening Reception with the Artists: Sunday, October 17, 2010 (5-9 PM)
Free and open to the public
DALLAS - The Bath House Cultural Center presents the 24th annual Día de los Muertos art exhibition, from October 16 to November 13, 2010. This lively eclectic exhibition features 62 local, regional, national and international artists working in traditional and contemporary styles to celebrate, explore and honor people, things, and ideas that have “passed on.”
An opening reception with the artists will be held on Sunday, October 17, 2010 from 5 to 7 PM. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

About the Exhibition:
For almost a quarter of a century, the Bath House Cultural Center has given artists an opportunity to become a part of the celebratory festivities of the Day of the Dead by organizing the Día de los Muertos show, which allows artists to create works that are inspired by the ceremonies of honor, symbols of remembrance, and expressions of joy that are closely associated with the Mexican tradition. The inclusion of traditional Día de los Muertos altarpieces alongside contemporary artwork in a variety of media is evidence that this show, albeit rooted in the syncretistic Pre-Columbian and Catholic tradition of All Saints Day and the Day of the Dead, is a source of inspiration for people of many cultures, races and backgrounds who embrace the celebration.

The themes of the 2010 exhibition are wide ranging, and include artwork that honors the memory of a Belarusian family that immigrated to the US, a traditional Brazilian tapete (colorful commemorative floor design), an installation honoring the victims of breast cancer, a Day of the Dead version of the art of Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli, as well as art that makes a statement about topics of music and popular culture, such as the memory of the hippie counterculture movement of the 1960s and 70s, and commemorative art for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Michael Jackson.

the fields project Bringing Art and Agriculture Together Oregon

The Fields Project is located in Oregon, IL, nestled in the scenic Rock River Hill Country. It is located amid state forests and parks, historical sites, sandstone outcroppings, prairie vegetation and wild life. This biodiversity has provided endless subject matter for artistic expression. Lorado Taft established The Eagles Nest Art Colony here in 1898. It continued through 1942 bringing in artists from the Art Institute and University of Chicago.

Our objectives are to focus public attention on art, agriculture, and our natural resources while creating new relationships between artists, farmers, environmentalists, and educators.

For painters, photographers, and sculptors, we have a nine-day program that includes lodging on a working farm. During this time, the artists can apply their art or choose to do a Field Sculpture. A Field Sculpture is an opportunity to “paint with the land” by cutting/mowing flora on a piece of land that can be up to 5 acres in size. These Field Sculptures are designed to be viewed and photographed from the air.

On the last Sunday of the event, we have a Fine Arts & Crafts Festival where visiting artists display and sell their work, along with regional artists and sculptors. The festival is held at Mix Park, located on Rt. 2, south of Rt. 64 in Oregon, IL.

There is a sculptor’s competition each year and the winning maquette is reproduced as a life-size bronze sculpture. Our goal is to place ten outdoor sculptures in the Oregon area in ten years. The first sculpture was installed in 2005. When the project is completed, there will be 16 public sculptures on the Oregon Sculpture Trail.
